  3. AboutTheAuthor WilliamDouglas William Douglas (1898-1980) was born in Maine , Minnesota. After graduating witha Bachelorsof ArtsinEnglishand Economics,hespenttwoyears teachinghighschool inYakima.However,he gottiredof thisanddecidedto pursue alegalcareer.HemetFranklinD. RooseveltatYaleand becamean advisorandfriendto the President.Heretiredin1975witha termlasting thirty-sixyearsandremainsthelongest-servingjusticeinthehistory ofthe court.ThefollowingexpertistakenfromOf MenAnd MountainsbyWilliamO. Douglas. It reveals how as a young boy William Douglas nearly drowned in a swimming pool. In this essay he talks about his fear of water and thereafter, howhefinallyovercomeit. Noticehowthe autobiographicalpartoftheselectionisused tosupporthisdiscussion of fear.
