  1. Rs/gis techniques for Rescue/relief

  2. Emergency Response-considerations • Rapid analysis of information coming from the impact areas • Quick field validations based on satellite imagery and ground based information Adapted from UNDTMP Disaster Assessment (1994)

  3. Emergency Response-considerations • Rapid Mapping of affected areas • Fast dissemination of first hand information to National/Provincial/Local level government DRM agencies

  4. Emergency Response-considerations • Quick identification of impact areas • Quick assessment of disaster magnitude Tsunami Strikes Sri Lanka: On December 26, 2004 Japan Earthuake

  5. Emergency Response using RS data • RS data plays a vital role in disaster response/recovery due to below reasons; • Time Efficient • Cost effective vs • airborne RS Larger Area Coverage • Multi-sensor/spectral/ • temporal • Covers inaccessible Areas • Faster extraction of GIS-ready data

  6. Natural Disasters Work in Two Phases Rapid Mapping Quick Response to Disaster Automatic map generation through Custom Developed Software MODIS, SPOT 4, SPOT 5, Vector data Detailed Assessment Ground surveys Damage Analysis for Infrastructure, Agriculture, Household etc. Detailed Reports

  7. Natural Disasters • Floods/ Rains 2010-2013

  8. Pakistan Floods 2010-2013 Rapid Analysis-Daily Water Inundation Maps

  9. Floods-2010 Maximum Flood Extent – 2010 Extensive riverine inundation and flash flooding in the mountainous regions

  10. Floods-2011 Maximum Flood Extent – 2011 Prolonged rainfall inundations in the lower Indus river region

  11. Floods-2012 Maximum Flood Extent – 2012 Floods 2012 Hill torrents and flash floods in the western sub-catchments of Indus

  12. Pakistan Floods;2010-2013Daily Inundation Maps • In the aftermath of flooding, rapid flood inundation maps are generated to asses the affected settlements • The rapid assessment maps are generated on daily basis and provides complete picture of affected settlements, breaches along river course, damages to agriculture and areas vulnerable to flooding based on terrain profile and ground elevation level

  13. Daily Data Acquisition of MODIS 22-Aug-2010 21-Aug-2010 13 20-Aug-2010

  14. Pakistan Floods;2010-2013District Wise Damage Assessment Maps • To further asses the situation and to efficiently plan rescue/relief efforts , district wise thematic maps of flood affected districts are required

  15. Affected Agriculture

  16. Badin District Pre Flood: 05 June 2011 Post Flood: 14 Oct 2011

  17. Gudu Barrage Pre Flood: 02 June 2010 Post Flood: 12 Aug 2010

  18. Jacobabad Post Flood: 03 Sep 2010 Pre Flood: 18 Jan 2009

  19. Pakistan Floods;2010-2013Monitoring of IDPs • Satellite imagery plays vital role in planning and coordination of movement of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in aftermath of disaster • RS data sets are used to identify suitable locations for establishing IDP camps. The camp sites are selected based on their terrain profile, ground elevation, available logistical support and flood water movement.

  20. Rapid Response Mapping Tool

  21. Rapid Response Mapping Tool (RRMT) • RMT is a custom built, ArcGIS Engine based tool that enables creation of maps according to the user criteria. • The purpose of this application is to create professional and standardized maps in shortest possible time, to simplify map development into few clicks of operations and to produce large volume of maps for diverse users.

  22. Rapid Response Mapping Tool (Contd.) • Rapid Response Mapping provides ready to use maps in less time with minimum efforts. It is very useful in emergent situations like natural disasters and catastrophes. • The tool also provides different analysis results for a range of datasets e.g in case of a disaster, it can provide • Estimation of the affected settlements and infrastructure • Aggregated and separated calculation of affected area • etc.

  23. RRMT - Requirements • In order to install RMT Application following components are need to be installed: • Dot Net Frame work 2.0 or above • ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 • ArcEngine Runtime 9.2 • After installing above components RMT can be installed. Simply double click the setup file and follow the instructions.
