  2. Elijah’s Last Assignment A story of God’s compassion, patience, mercy and the many opportunities God gives us to repent. The God of the Bible is a compassionate God. Ex.34:6-7; Psalm 103:10-12

History of Israel • History of Israel is one which tells the story of God’s mercy • History of Israel is also one of people’s rebellion • History of Israel demonstrates that in spite of people’s rebellion God shows mercy again and again. • I Kings 18 – “How long will you waver between two opinions?”

  4. Ahaziah Chooses • Ahaziah son of King Ahab becomes king in 853 A.D. • He was most likely present on Mt. Carmel with his father • Ahaziah knew that Jehovah hates sin, but Baal loves sin – Ahaziah chooses Baal – provoked God I Kings 22:51-53 • Ahaziah’s name means Jehovah has chosen.

Opportunities to Repent • When Ahaziah becomes King Moab rebels against Israel and causes great political humiliation to Ahaziah – 2 Kings 1:1 • Ahaziah experiences great economic humiliation – 2 Chronicles 20:35-36 • Ahaziah experiences great physical humiliation. • At each of these points Ahaziah could have called on the name of the Lord. • Instead of turning to true God – Ahaziah puts his future in hands of Baal-zebub. 2 Kings 1:2

Boo Yah • All of us would like to know the future. • Corporations spend millions to know the future. • Personal investors want to know future and turn into “Mad Money” with Cramer • People watch Cramer because they want to know the future • The desire to know the future is not wrong in itself. What’s wrong is going to the wrong place.

  7. Elijah’s Final Message • Angel of the Lord v.3 – pre-incarnate Christ • “go up” = Arise – Elijah is to ask one question: Is there no God in Israel v.3 • Ahaziah recognizes the messenger and message come from Elijah – prophet of God • No repentance and Ahaziah sends a company of 50 soldiers to confront Elijah – they are consumed by fire….still no repentance v.10 • Ahaziah sends another company with same results v.11-12

  8. Where Could I Go – but to the Lord • Last group of 50 men kneel at feet of Elijah • Elijah makes personal call on Ahaziah v. 16 • Ahaziah dies v.17 • “I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming thought that I had nowhere else to go.” Abraham Lincoln

There is a Balm in Gilead • Jeremiah 8:20-22 – “Is there no balm in Gilead? • There is a balm in Gilead – but Israel (we) did not avail themselves to the gracious opportunities God granted for their healing. • Jeremiah 8 – “Is there no physician?” • There is a balm – there is a physician and his name is Jesus. Matthew 1:21 • We are not yet dead…and God is patient giving us another opportunity to repent. • Will you pray, “God have mercy upon me, a sinner?”
