    2. What Is Risk Assessment? Risk assessment is an organised method of looking at possible health and safety risks in any given situation and what might need to be done to minimise the risk. Much of this process is common sense and is carried out automatically before all activities. You already do a number of things before taking part in any activity that minimise the risk of injury. With reference to a sporting activity of your choice, list the precautions you take before you start.

    3. Your answer can be divided up into 3 categories: Precautions that relate to your person.

    4. Precautions that relate to the environment.

    7. Precautions That Relate To Your Person Carry out a warm up prior to activity. Carry out a cool down after activity. Remove all jewellery/Tie hair back. Train regularly to improve technique and skills. Participate at the appropriate age group and ability level. Always play/compete within the laws of the game. Are you wearing protective clothing that is compulsory for activity? (Shin pads for soccer/Helmet for batting in cricket) Are you wearing suitable footwear for surface? (Astroboots/Long or short studs) Have you considered wearing other protective equipment? (Gum shield/Shoulder pads for rugby)

    8. Precautions That Relate To The Environment Is the pitch playable? (Too hard/Too soft/Too wet/Too muddy) Is the playing surface clear of foreign objects? (Litter on pitch/Water on indoor surface) Are safety features in place? (Cage for discus/Rope around pitch) Is weather acceptable? (Too cold/Too wet/Too foggy) Are you aware of layout? (Where is the deep end?)

    9. Precautions That Relate To Any Equipment Used Is all protective equipment in place? (Post protectors/Pads on trampoline/Mats in gym) Are all pieces of equipment fully functional? (No broken pieces or sharp edges) Is all equipment stable? (Wheels up on vaulting box) Are spotters/supporters in place where needed? (Around trampoline/When doing bench-press using free weights)

    10. Questions List the factors you would have to consider when carrying out a risk assessment for the following activities: Playing a rugby match. Playing badminton in a sports hall. A discus competition. Circuit training in the gym. Cricket net practice in the sports hall.
