  1. NEW YORK CITY COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Mathematics Department Meeting April 12, 2018

  2. Approval of minutes from March 1, 2018 • Next department meetings are: May 3, 2018 May 10, 2018 – election of the department appointments committee

  3. Administrative Dates • Midterm grades are due Thursday, April 12. • Last day to withdraw with a “W” grade, April 18. • Classroom observations reports are due April 19. • Registration and advisement Thursday April 19 – Wednesday May 16. • Snow day makeup class: Thursday May 17 follows the Wednesday schedule. • Final exam period: Friday May 18 – Thursday May 24. • Final grades are due Tuesday, May 29.

  4. Summer Advisement • Every Wednesday (except July 4) in July and August • 10:00-3:00 pm • 60% adjunct pay • LAS student orientation – August 22

  5. Upcoming • Faculty scholarship report is due on Monday April 30. • Annual evaluation conference starting April 26 – Please submit your PARSE at least one week in advance of your conference appointment. • Faculty submit to OFSR final updated PARSE forms and supporting documentation by June 4.

  6. Upcoming • Department chair’s election at OFSR on May 2 and 3. • Department Appointments Committee election on May 10. • Honor’s Convocation-Wednesday, May 30, 2018 • Commencement-– Monday, June 4, 2018

  7. Teaching Reduction • Higher expectations for faculty to show activity and product in • Research • College and Department Service

  8. Budget • Concern that the teaching reduction may not be sufficiently funded. • Tech reduction – CUNY Central has shifted some technology expenses to each college ($1.3 million or 40% in tech fee)

  9. College Council/Math Curriculum • College council delegate at large and department delegates • No math representative on the College Council Curriculum Committee • Newly proposed health degree program • CST is proposing Data Science program • Social Science is proposing Data Analytics program • Electrical and Mechanical Engineering departments are asking for math substitutions (MAT 2675?) • Should health majors take MAT 1190 or 1275?

Improving Student Retention and Success • City Tech received positive Middle States report. • Improving student retention and success is identified as an area needing improvement. • Math courses/curriculum are instrumental. • Course coordination • Mentoring of instructors • Classroom observations • Learning outcome assessment

Curriculum Prerequisite changes of the following courses: MAT 2440 Discrete Structures and Algorithms I  From: MAT 1375 and (CST 1201 or CST 2403) To: MAT 1375 or higher and one of the following: CST 1201 or CST 2403 or MAT 1630 MAT 2630 Applied Math Tech - Numerical Methods From: MAT 1575, MAT 2580 and one of the following: CST 1101 or higher or MAT 1475H or MAT 1476L To: MAT 1575, MAT 2580 and one of the following: CST 1101 or higher or MAT 1475H or MAT 1476L or MAT 1630 MAT 3770 - Math Modeling I - Optimization From: MAT 2580, MAT 2675, CST 1101 To: MAT 2580, MAT 2675, and one of the following: CST 1101 or higher, or MAT 1630

  12. Math Education • The new NYS requirements are expected to increase: The student teaching days from 40 to 70 days. The observation hours from 100 to 200 clock hours • Dual certification in math and computer science. • Tasks: develop course outlines for the new courses, or modify existing courses Timeline: • To be voted in the next curriculum committee meeting and the next department meeting. • To submit the completed proposal for major curriculum changes by September 2018, for implementation in Fall 2019
