  2. Students Spent 4 Hours Performing Hands-on Experiments • Identifying an Unknown Salt • Electroplating Copper • Identifying an Unknown Artificial Sweetener by: • the presence or absence of a carbonyl group • the presence or absence of sulfur

  3. 1. Identifying anUnknown Salt • Using the flame test to identify the cation • Using double replacement reactions to identify the anion • Using these techniques to identify the salts used in various brands of low-salt chips.

  4. 2. Electrochemistry • Building an electrolytic cell • Identifying spontaneous single replacement reactions (non-electroplating) • Electroplating copper onto a nickel • Determining the amount of copper plating

Identifying an UnknownArtificial Sweetener • Identifying the functional groups present in each sweetener • Combusting each sweetener • Titrating the ash for sulfur to identify sulfonyl groups • Performing Infrared Spectroscopy to identify the presence of carbonyl groups • Identifying each unknown sweetener based on the presence or absence of carbonyl and sulfonyl groups
