  3. English colonies use indentured servants English colonists turn to slave labor

  4. Rum and guns traded for slaves. • Slaves to the Americas traded for sugar. + = Power

  5. = More = More Slaves Power

  6. Sugar shipped to the English colonies and traded for rum, guns. • The cycle would then begin again.

  7. Horrific experience. 10%-20% of the passengers on each ship would die. Slaves were often chained together.

  8. They would have to sit almost the entire journey with no or little ventilation. • The slaves were not fed very well nor given much to drink.

  11. The US was worried about more pressing issues. • The government compromised over slavery until the Civil War became inevitable.

  14. As property meaning no rights or protections Dred Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom because his master took him to free territory. Supreme Court ruled he was property and could not file a law suit.
