  1. Electromagnetic Brakes: What You Need to Know

  2. Where would we be without brakes? They are one of those things that are not exactly on everyone’s mind, and yet the majority of the population uses them every day. For instance, when you put the washing in the washing machine it probably never occurs to you how it works. You just put it in, select the wash you need, and press go. But at some point, it has to stop! The same applies to your car. Every time you need to stop, you use the brakes. OK, so you don’t drive, but use a bike. Those levers on either side of the handlebar operate the brakes. Brakes are everywhere. That includes massive items of equipment such as cranes. When you use a crane to lift a load, you need to slow it down and stop it when it reaches the point at which you need to deliver it. Cranes will use electromagnetic brakes, and there are two different types of electromagnetic brake. One is the spring-engaged, or power-off brake. This type of brake is disengaged while the power is on. When power is turned off, the brake engages: the compression springs apply pressure which then operates the brake.

  3. Power-On Works the Opposite Way An electromagnetic brake that works with power-on does the opposite. These are brakes like the Lenze brake, and others such as Temporiti, Warner, KREB, Binder, and more, all of which we can supply at CY Electrical & Cranes. With the power off, the armature is disengaged from the body of the magnet and can freely rotate. When the power is turned on, then the armature engages with the magnet body and the brake operates. Whichever type of brake is in use, they both produce a fast response time using high torque. They can all be used for decelerating a load, stopping it, and holding it in a static position. Electromagnetic brakes such as the Lenze brake, have several advantages. Apart from anything else, a well-designed electromagnetic brake is extremely effective at dissipating the heat generated when compared with a mechanical system. It can produce enhanced performance with a smooth backlash- free operation. Provided the right friction material is used, an electromagnetic brake will reduce wear and in turn that means that the parts will last longer and therefore need replacing less often, resulting in lower overall costs. Most of the brakes that we can supply are in stock and can be despatched immediately. We also aim to beat the price of any competitor. Just ask us.
