  2. Like many pieces of industrial equipment, cranes do not last forever. There are so many industries that use cranes for lifting and transporting parts and materials that they have become part of the furniture. However, the uses of cranes can vary enormously. For instance, in a metal fabricating workshop an overhead crane can transport materials from one end of the shop to the other and is often used to replace a lift truck. It can drop the load at a machining centre that has its’ own lighter-duty crane. This means that you can have one operator running the crane when required, so it is not a full-time job. Whereas with a forklift truck there is often a dedicated driver that does nothing else but run around delivering materials. So, there can be a considerable saving on labour costs when using an overhead bridge crane. The crane runs on elevated tracks and can either run on top of the girders or be underhung. This also keeps the floor space available. Where you have a forklift running about, it also uses quite a bit of space. This means that in many shops where space is at a premium, you are much better off with an overhead crane because you can use that space for another machine tool instead of having a wide aisle for the forklift. Another type of crane is the gantry crane, which is supported on a pair of tracks, or can also be run on four wheels. A big advantage today is that even older cranes can be upgraded to use radio remote controls. That means that the operator can be some distance away from the crane while running it.
