  1. The Metric System Meters, Grams and Liters

  2. The Metric System • The metric system is a measurement system based on the number10. • Math is easy because calculations are multiples of 10 • Other countries and scientists and engineers use the metric system for measurement. • It is called the “International System” (SI System) • In the United States we use both “Customary Units” based old English measures and metrics

  3. Metric Units • Length… m______ • Mass… g_____ • Volume…l______

  4. Metric Prefixes • Metric Units have prefixes that are multiples of 10. • What do we call a thousand meters? • What do we call one tenth of a liter?

  5. Meters • Meters measure length or distance • One millimeter is about the thickness of a dime.

  6. Meters • One centimeter is about the width of a pinky finger

  7. Meters • A meter is a little more than a yard(about 3 feet and 3 inches)

  8. A kilometer is about six city blocks or 10 football fields. A kilometers is about 0.6 mile Meters

  9. Gram • Grams are used to measure mass or the “weight” of an object.

  10. Grams • A milligram weighs about as much as a grain of salt.

  11. Grams • 1 gram weighs about as much as a small paper clip. • 1 kilogram weighs about as much as 6 apples or 2 pounds.

  12. Liters • Liters measure liquids or volume. 2 Liter Soda

  13. Liter • 1 milliliter is about the amount of one drop

  14. Liter • 1 liter is half of a 2 liter bottle of Coke or other soda

  15. A kiloliter would be about 500 2-liter bottles of pop Liter

  16. What unit would you use to measure each of the following items?

  17. Which unit would you use to measure the length of this bicycle? km m cm mm

  18. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of a penny? km g cL mg

  19. Which unit would you use to measure the water in an aquarium? L m cL mg

  20. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of a feather? L m cL mg

  21. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of a student desk? kg g cL mg

  22. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of a whole watermelon? kg g cL mg

  23. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of an egg? kg g mm mg

  24. Which unit would you use to measure the volume of a can of soup? Soup kL L mm mL

  25. Which unit would you use to measure this glass of milk? kL L cL mL

  26. Which unit would you use to measure the distance across Kansas? km m cm mL

  27. You are totally awesome!

  28. Changing Metric Units • To most easily change from one prefix to another in the metric system you move the decimal.

  29. Place Values of Metric Prefixes Movethe decimal point

  30. Place Values of Metric Prefixes Movethe decimal point to the left.

  31. Sorry! • That is not the BEST choice! Try again!

  32. You're on a roll!!

  33. Thumbs up!

  34. You are first rate!!

  35. Way to shine!
