  1. Biotechnology Why is science not a stagnant study? Ch. 1.4 (pp. 19-23)

  2. Learning Target: BiotechnologyI Can...Describe examples of frequently improving technology and infer how their use yields new information to be evaluated. • I Will… • Compare and contrast different types of microscopes, and medical imaging techniques. • Discuss the use of computer models to study biological systems. • Describe ways in which the use of DNA has impacted biological sciences.

  3. Why does science continually need to reevaluate our body of scientific knowledge? • New information and new discoveries add to our understanding of life and existing knowledge base. • This means it can change what we thought we knew!

  4. Imaging technologies • Provide new views of life • A microscope provides an enlarged image of an object for deeper study.

  5. Imaging technologies • Provide new views of life • X-rays, CAT scans, and MRIs are used in medicine. Computed Axial Tomography (CAT Scan)

  6. Complex systems are modeled on computers • Computer models are used to study systems that cannot be studied directly. • Aides in: • Heart Attacks • Effects of medicines on the human body • Movement of water molecules out of a cell • Spread of a disease through a population • Computer models are used when experiments are not safe, ethical, or practical.

  7. New understandings of DNA allow us to study genetics at the molecular level. • Molecular genetics allows for genetic engineering. • Genomics compares entire sequences of DNA within and across species. • DNA testing is used in both medicine and forensic science.

  8. Learning Check : Biotechnology • Provide an example of how technology has assisted biologists gain a better understanding of life. • How might the use of technology inform you about lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, or habits such as smoking?
