  1. EC CONCERTOII project REMINING-LowexPresentation for the CONCERTO meeting,November 14, 2011 – Brussels, BelgiumExtracting energy from minewater Erwin Roijen Cauberg-Huygen Consulting Engineers Maastricht the Netherlands

  2. What is REMINING-Lowex about? • Developing sustainable communities in mining and former mining areas > transition to clean energy • Balancing the local energy demand (buildings) with the local available low valued energy sources (renewables, i.e. minewater, but also other renewables)

  3. The Remining-lowex locations update on developments and progress

  4. The Remining-lowex locations update on developments and progress

  5. The Remining-lowex locations update on developments and progress

  6. Update locations – Heerlen, The Netherlands • Operational buildings: • CBS new completed September 2009 • Heerlerheide centre completed Autumn 2010 • Buildings in preparation: • ABP is lowex, but not connected (yet) • Educational Campus (minewater & biomass) • Swimming pool Otterveurdt • Exploitation and monitoring • Heerlerheide and CBS office monitoring ongoing • Still negotiations with ABP and Educational Campus

  7. Update locations – Heerlerheide Centre

  8. Update locations – CBS Office Heerlen 20.000 m2 gross floor area

  9. Update locations – Zagorje, Slovenia • Completion of • the demo research unit OLEA on the usage of minewater and other renewables • the community energy monitoring and management system • the first solar photo voltaic power plant to the public grid • the first charging stations for electric vehicles • expanded the biomass district heating grid • completed a project documentation for further expansion of biomass district heating.

  10. Update locations – Zagorje, Slovenia Research unit OLEA demonstrates: • low exergy direct surface heating with minewater, • building envelope in the standard of passive buildings, • phase change materials for heat and cold storage, • solar thermal collectors for sanitary hot water preparation and support of heating, • ventilation system with waste air heat recovery with highly efficient regenerators, • cooling of the building via a ground air heat exchanger, • energy efficient LED electrical light, • solar photo voltaic cells and direct methanol fuel cell for electrical self-sufficiency, • advanced control systems on the basis of weather forecast and responsive systems management, • rain water storage, • dry compost toilet with waste water treatment in constructed wetland.

  11. Research unit OLEA

  12. Update locations – Zagorje, Slovenia Energy management system (community scale): • to measure and control energy flows,  • to analyse data and define actions in order to optimize energy consumption, • to replace out-of-date energy accountancy • educational proposes in order to strengthen a responsible and environmentally friendly energy management.

  13. Update locations – Zagorje, Slovenia Solar power plant: • Capacity 13,9 kW • Annual production about 15.000 kWh • Connected to public grid

  14. Update associated community: Czeladz, Poland • Preparation of retrofitting SRK office • Favourable conditions for connection to minewater • Energy Policy Plan Czeladz in progress now

  15. Update associated community: Bourgas, Bulgaria • Ideas for buildings to connect • Furniture factory ABV • Several buildings in Cherno More • Energy Policy Plan Bourgas is planned/in preparation • Studies on several energy configurations completed • Ongoing review of the abandoned coal fields in Bulgaria.

  16. Update work package 2: Research • Development of a technical guidebook on low exergy solutions • Development and testing of a high temperature heat pump for DHW: • University of Ljubljana has completed following research activities: • A coupled model of buildings and district heating system that was initially used for integration of dispersed sources of renewable heat and now is upgraded with polygeneration (head, cold and electricity). The reports of this work are available. • A hand book on building physics and low exergy. This handbook is available in Slovenian but will be translated in English.

  17. Update work package 4: Energy exploitation • Supporting all locations: • Feasibility studies • Financial prognoses and business cases • General notes and guidelines on energy exploitation

  18. Update work package 5: Legal aspects • A comparative study by EURACOM on the laws relating to the use of the minewater • Fields of the analysis include: • European regulation: Competition, states aids regulation, environmental provisions; environmental laws including mining laws; sustainable development regulations (on National and European levels); • financial supports (European funds (ERDF), national and regional incentive system. • The legal aspects on minewater and geothermal energy are completed now for France, Hungary, Spain, UK and Slovenia. • Extended studies of legal aspects concerning minewater use in Silesia and Bourgas. • General conclusion: there is no specific law relating to minewater as an energy source

  19. Update work package 6: Training • Training material condensed in papers – guidebooks • Training structure: • General introduction • Elaboration of case(s) as example and framework for knowledge transfer • Training of decision makers and builders in the communities on a broad and general level • Training of: • industry partners and suppliers on a detailed component level • participating researchers on an advanced level • the research community on a EU and international level by seminars in the frame of conferences • students by elaborated modules for education on universities

  20. Update work package 7: Network and dissemination • Highlights: • The 8th REMINING meeting has been hosted and organized by Hunosa, Asturias, Spain. • Contact established with ACOM Russia, ACOM Spain, British Coal Authority and NCMM, INTERREG IV ReSource project. • Interest for new minewater projects in Belgium (Beringe, Waterschei, Mons), Germany, Spain (Hunosa) and Russia (Novashatkinsk) • Events, e.g.: • Polygeneration Conference, March 2011, Tarragona Spain • RETS Conference, 29 March 2011, Sittard, the Netherlands
