  1. Importance of Baluchari from Bengal What is Baluchari? Baluchar Saree or Baluchuri saree is a type of saree, a garment worn by women across India and Bangladesh. This particular type of Indian saree originates from Bengal and is known for the representations of mythological scenes on the pallu of the saree. It was mainly produced at Murshidabad, but currently Bishnupur and its surroundings of West Bengal is the only place where the authentic Baluchuri sarees occur. It takes about a week to produce such a saree. The Baluchari Saree has obtained the status of Geographical Indication in India. Origin of Baluchari Baluchari saree comes from Bengal. Baluchari refers to the traditional weaving of Indian silk sarees using the silk of Bengal. The fabric is very thin and transparent with a soft sheet. The saree presents large Kalka motifs in the center surrounded by narrow ornamental borders. These are framed by a series of figurative motifs worked in rows around the kalkas. The 4 traditional colors are blue, yellow, red and green. The motifs are entirely in silver zari. It is usually five meters long and 42 "wide. The body of the saree is covered with small butis and a beautiful floral design crosses the edges.
