  3. Over the Next 30 Years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Predicts for the San Francisco Bay Area : • >63% Probability of a 6.7+Magnitude Earthquake • Probability is Highest for the Hayward Fault - 31% • Second Highest is the San Andreas Fault - 21% UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

Cover! Hold On! • Organizations: Practice Other Aspects of Emergency Plan • UCOP – Will Be A Participant UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

  6. October 15, 2009 at 10:15 AM • At 1111 Franklin Street • PA System will Announce “Earthquake Drill” • UCOP Staff will “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” • 1111 Franklin Street will Practice Other Aspects of Its Emergency Response Plan • Other UCOP Sites at Leased Facilities • Floor Wardens and/or Department Safety Officers will Announce “Earthquake Drill” • UCOP Staff will “Drop! Cover! Hold On!” UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

  7. Drop! Cover! Hold On! • DROP to the Ground (Before the Earthquake Drops You!), • Take COVER by Getting Under a Sturdy Desk or Table, and • HOLD ON to it Until the Shaking Stops UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

Hold On! • If No Desk or Table Near You • Cover Face & Head with Arms & Crouch in a Corner of Room • Do Not Run To Another Room to Find a Table • Seek to Immediately Protect Yourself • Earthquakes Occur Violently without Warning – You Would Likely Be Knocked to the Ground • More Likely to Be Injured By Falling/Flying Objects UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

Do Not …. • …Face Windows – Flying Glass • …Get in A Doorway • Will Not Protect You From Falling Debris or Flying Glass • …Run Outside • Can Be Hit By Falling Debris or Flying Glass • Safer to Stay Indoors Under a Table/Desk • …Believe the “Triangle of Life” Recommendations–Have Been Discredited UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

After the Initial Shock Has Subsided • Remain Calm & Be Prepared for Aftershocks • Check for Injuries & Administer First Aid to the Degree You Are Trained • Follow Directions Over Building PA System or Floor Warden Directions • Cannot Immediately Evacuate the Building • Must Assess Damage to Stairways UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

Inspect Your Work Area • Secure Your Space • Overhead Items Above Immediate Work Area - Removed or Secured with Earthquake Putty • Overhead Shelves/Cabinets Closed or Locked • Heavy Items Stored in Lower or Middle Shelves • Breakables on Lower Shelves/Closed Cabinets • Pictures Secured to Not Fall off Hooks • Clear Exit Pathway Maintained • Brace Bookshelves/Cabinets > 6 Feet Tall UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting

  13. “Secure Your Space” Inspection Checklist • Web-Based Version Will Be Sent to All UCOP Employees • Hard Copy From Your Department Safety Officer • UCOP Be Smart About Safety Webpage • Complete Inspection ASAP, No Later Than October 15, 2009 UCOP September 2009 Safety Meeting
