  1. The Portrayal of Women in the Media By Tiffany Carroll

  2. Then and Now • Gender roles within journalism have been an issue for years. • The portrayal of women in media has evolved tremendously overtime. • In the 1950s, women were perceived as the ones that take care of the home. They were to get married, have babies, stay at home and raise them; now times have changed.

  3. Dickinson and Gill • “…the messages reflected in advertising are evaluated from the perspective of an individual’s moral philosophy or ethical judgment.” • They pointed out that if advertisements depict a female to whom one can relate to or aspire to be, and she is negatively portrayed, then offence will be taken.

  4. America’s Next Top Model • In May 2003, a reality show aired on television and suggested that being thin is beautiful. • Critics saw the show as feeding into set stereotypes.

  5. Music • Negative depictions of women can also been seen in the music arena. • Women are almost always negatively portrayed when it comes to rap music.

  6. Conclusion • In conclusion, although women are portrayed negatively in the media, some women allow it to happen by continuously supporting it. • In order for the degradation to stop, society has to stop accepting it.
