  1. Tour Ed Mine • May 1 and 2, 2014 • Team 1 – Thursday • Team 2 – Friday • Where are we going? 748 Bull Creek Road Tarentum, PA 15084 This is close to Route 28, and the Kittanning area They are open to the public- Memorial Day through Labor Day; 10:00-4:00

  2. Basic Information • All guides are experienced coal miners, educated in mine safety • Understand what it is like to be a miner • See authentic mining tools and methods from the 1850’s through today • Walk into a 1785 log house • Museum filled with mining communities goods (Take time to really look closely at the bottles and various articles on display)

  3. Hard Hats • Do I have to wear a hard hat? • Absolutely! All are required to wear their hard hat at all times. (Both while riding in the coal car and walking in the actual mine) • You will ride in the coal car for about a ½ mile journey • This is the coal car that will take you 160 feet below the Earth’s surface

  4. What Do I Wear? • Layers! • We go rain or shine • It may be 80 degrees outside • The mine temperature, year round is 52-54 degrees We strongly suggest play type clothes with a light jacket, sweater, or hoodie Shoes, walking type and toes covered at all times

  5. What Do I Bring? • Packed lunch and one large beverage or two regular size drinks- All disposable items • If you bring a camera you are totally responsible for it at all times • Sweater/ light jacket/ hoodie

  6. Where and When Do We Eat? • We have a large pavilion reserved • If it rains it is best to eat there • If it is a nice day, we have a very large field for you to picnic under a tree or just relax in the grass • All groups will eat when they are finished with their tours, basically you can all wait until everyone has completed the tour or once you are done you may eat-please find out from your teacher

  7. What Does the Day Look Like? • Am Homeroom • 8:26- Homeroom • 9:15, depart for the mine • 10:00 arrival, check in, split into groups • Homerooms in different areas- 4 groups • Mine School • Museum • Mine • Field/ pavilion/ lunch ( safe play area) • Return to Marshall by 2:00

  8. Prior to boarding buses, we will begin watching the movie, October Sky. • When we return (or at the location), we will discuss Monday’s field trip and continue the movie.

  9. Be Prepared To Ask Questions • These men are all real miners- they love to answer questions! • How dark is dark? • Why is there a Canary in the mine? • Did the miners have a salary? • Where did they shop for food? • Medicine? • ???????
