Aggression Goes Unchecked • Japan took over Manchuria • League of Nations takes no action • Italy Invades Ethiopia • League of Nations votes for sanction on Italy, but they are not enforced • Hitler re-armed Germany, moved troops into the Rhineland a demilitarized zone w/ France • Western democracies denounced actions but did nothing

Aggression Goes Unchecked cont. • appeasement- giving in to the demands of an aggressor in order to keep the peace • Why the West appeased Hitler • Great depression • Fear of modern tech’s power • Pacifism after WWI • Fascism a defense vs. communism • Faith in diplomacy • pacifism- opposition to all war

  5. I. Aggression Goes Unchecked cont. • U.S. passes the Neutrality Acts- laws that forbid sale of weapons or loans to warring countries • Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis- These nations all agreed to fight communism, not interfere with one another

Spain Collapses Into Civil War • 1936 fascist Francisco Franco led a revolt that led to civil war • Hitler and Mussolini sent arms and forced to back Franco • Soviets sent arms to fight against him • Guernica- small town, air raided, 1,600 innocents die • Testing ground for new weapons for Hitler • Franco wins war, become fascist dictator

  7. III. German Aggression Continues • 1938 Hitler annexes Austria • Called the Anschluss • Nazis already controlled top government • Hitler just walks in with his army and takes over • Violation of Versailles treaty • Western democracies take no action

  8. IV. The Munich Conference • Hitler wanted Sudetenland a German speaking portion of Czechoslovakia • France/ Britain unwilling to fight a war over it • Munich Conference- they cave to Hitler’s demands • British PM Neville Chamberlain declares “Peace for our time” upon returning

Europe Plunges Toward War • 1939 Hitler takes the rest of Czech • Democracies pledge to protect Poland if it is attacked • Nazi-Soviet Pact- agreed not to fight each other and to divide up Poland and Eastern Europe between them • September 1, 1939 Hitler invades Poland, France and Britain declare war, WWII had begun
