  1. VOCABULARY! Vent-opening in earths crust where lava erupts and flows out onto the surface Crater- Bowl shaped depression that forms around the central vent. Caldera-Large crater that can form when the side or summit of the volcano collapses into the magma chamber during or after an eruption.

More Vocabulary Shield Volcano- broad volcano with gently sloping sides built by nonexplosive eruptions of basaltic lava that accumulates in layers Cinder-cone volcano-Small, steep-sided volcano that is built by accumulation of tephera around the vent. Composite volcano-Large, sloping volcano built by violent eruptions of volcanic fragments and lava that accumulate in alternating layers.

  3. Even More Vocabulary! Tephra- Rock fragments that are thrown into the air during an eruption that fall back to earth. Pyroclastic flow- Swift-moving, potentially deadly clouds of gas, ash and other material produced by a violent eruption. Hot spot-Unusually hot areas in the earth’s mantle that is stationary for long periods of time.
