  2. Unit one~Science • The Science of mapmaking: -Survey the area, take a satelliteimage, then GIS it. (chapter 1)

  3. Unit one~Technology • Geographers tools include: -Maps, globes, and data that can be displayed in a variety of ways. (chapter 1)

  4. Unit one~Society • Types of Government: -Democracy -Monarchy -Dictatorship -Communism (chapter 4)

  5. Unit two~Economy • The United States has the LARGEST economy in the world and runs on free enterprise. (chapter 6) • Canada’s main industry is logging. (chapter 7)

  6. Unit two~Science • The United States has seven different climates: humid continental, humidsubtropical, highland, semiarid, desert, Mediterranean, and marine west coast. • Canada only has three: Marine west coast, tundra, and subarctic. (chapter 5)

  7. Unit two~Technology • Railroad began building in North America in the early 19th century. • The first was built in 1869, crossing the U.S. • The next in 1885, from Montreal, Canada, to British Columbia. (chapter 5)

  8. Unit two~Society • America is so diverse that it was given the name “Nation of Immigrants”. (chapter 6) • Canada is one of the worlds richest countries. (chapter 7)

  9. Unit three~Economy • Many people work on sugar crop plantations, but the pay in Latin America is poor so the per capita income for the Caribbean is low. (chapter 10)

  10. Unit three~Science • TheParana River in Brazil is a majorwater source because of its large tides affected by the moon. (chapter 9)

  11. Unit three~technology • Latin America is a great source of oilbecause of VenezuelaandMexico’snew advanced oil reserves. (chapter 9)

  12. Unit three~Society • In Mexico today, about 85% of children attend school, and they plan to invest large sums in education for the future. (chapter 10)

  13. Unit four~Economy • Europe's two main resources are coal and iron ore, for an industrialized economy. (chapter 12)

  14. Unit four~Science • Paris’s precipitation is one of the most steady in the world, but it’s climate is one of the most unsteady, shown here: (chapter 12)

  15. Unit four~Technology • To make things happen, the Venice Island workers have built over 150 canals that snake around the islands. (chapter 12)

  16. Unit four~Society • Currently, Spain has a minority conflict, the Basques want full independence, even though Spain already granted self rule, this has led to violence. (chapter 13)

  17. Unit five~Economy • Since Russia’s economy is not very excellent, they have adapted to a command economy. (chapter 16)

  18. Unit five~Science • Chernobyl’s power plant explosion left nuclear radiation around the city, causing related diseases to the population. (chapter 16)

  19. Unit five~Society • Education is the big deal in Russia, they look forward to modernizing their society by bringing up literacy rates. (chapter 16)

  20. Unit six~Economy • Africa’s wealth in resources comes mainly from minerals, such as gold, platinum, and diamonds. (chapter 18)

  21. Unit six~Science • Africa is an abundant source of cocoa beans. Which makes chocolate!  (chapter 18)

  22. Unit six~Technology • In the Niger Delta, oil industry is one of the only jobs available, made easier by huge pipelines flowing along the delta. (chapter 18)

  23. Unit six~Society • In Africa’s society today, women rights are changing! New freedom, praying laws, and work availability are in their favor. (chapter 19)

  24. Unit seven~Economy • Today, SW Asia holds about one half of the worlds oil, most along the Persian Gulf. (chapter 21)

  25. Unit seven~Science • In the Rub al-Khali desert, oasis’s are actually common. This happens because the sand is low enough to get springs, scientists believe that in some time the desert will be washed over. (chapter 21)

  26. Unit seven~Technology • Due to SW Asia’s smarts, drip irrigation is a major advantage they’ve accumulated. (chapter 21)

  27. Unit seven~Society • The Kurds of SW Asia are a stateless nation, and refuse to be mixed with populations of Turkey, Iraq, or Syria. (chapter 23)

  28. Unit eight~Economy • India has a huge economy, even though about half of Indialives in poverty. (chapter 25)

  29. Unit eight~Science • 96% of India’s energy comes from minerals or fuel. (chapter 24)

  30. Unit eight~Technology • Because of serious water pollution, medical scientists in India are coming up with all new vaccines to cure things such as hepatitis, typhoid, and cholera. (chapter 24)

  31. Unit eight~Society • In India, the society is so broad that over 1,000 languages are spoken! (chapter 25)

  32. Unit nine~Economy • East Asia runs on two economies, rural and industrial. (chapter 28)

  33. Unit nine~Science • China has health care programs, but unlike the U.S. if someone gets sick, patients are given an herbal remedy, a mix of plant and some “unknown chemicals”… (chapter 28)

  34. Unit nine~Technology • The Three Gorges Dam, will be the largest dam in the world when completed. It’s 600ft high and a valley more than one mile wide! (chapter 27)

  35. Unit nine~Society • Most of China has accepted urbanization but not Mongolia! They still herd for food and sleep in tents called yurts. (chapter 28)

  36. Unit ten~Economy • East Asia and Oceania has an uneven economy, industries are just spread randomly across the area. (chapter 31)

  37. Unit ten~Science • Nuclear testing has been performed near a place called Bikini Atoll, but the radiation is making islanders sick and causing damage to the fish, a main food source. (chapter 30)

  38. Unit ten~Society • Although this part of Asia is assumed to be the most traditional, there is one thing they’ve adapted to fairly well, blue jeans!

  39. Vocabulary words! GIS: Technology that uses digital software to make maps in political and physical layers. Map: Two dimensional representation of the earths surface. Globe: Three dimensional representation of the earth. Democracy: A type of government in which citizens hold power by electing representatives. Monarchy: A government in which a ruling family (kings and queens) hold power. Dictatorship: A type of government in which an individual holds all power. Communism: A system is which the government holds nearly all power.

  40. Vocabulary Words Cont. Free Enterprise: Private individuals own most companies, and businesses. Tundra: flat treeless lands forming around the Arctic Ocean. Per Capita Income: The amount of money earned by each person in a political unit. Parana River: Central South America, traveling 3,000 miles south and west. Command Economy: Goods and services are determined by the central government. Niger Delta: Rich oil deposits. Rub al-Khali: one of the largest deserts in the world; 250,000 miles across. Oasis: water source in a desert.

  41. I promise this will help one day… Drip irrigation: Small pipes that only let some water down to the soil, to save more water for the crops. Stateless nation: A nation that does not have legal land. Three Gorges Dam: A dam in China, the largest in the world, to control flooding.
