  1. California Common Core State Standards December 13, 2011 Information taken from Sacramento COE, San Joaquin COE, California Department of Education 1

  2. The California Common Core State Standards Build toward preparing students to be college and career ready in literacy and numeracy by the end of high school Provide a vision of what it means to be a literate person in the twenty-first century Build understanding and higher-level thinking skills in mathematics Are internationally benchmarked 2

  3. ELA Organization Emphasis on Informational Text Literacy in History/Social Science & Technical Subjects Math Two Types of Standards Balance Grade Shifts Elementary 8th Grade High School Overview of ELA and Mathematics 3

  4. The Standards comprise three main sections: A comprehensive K-5 section embedded literacy standards standards for foundational skills (concepts of print, alphabetic principle, writing, other basic conventions) Organization for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects 4

  5. Grades 6-12 ELA standards Grades 6-12 literacy standards for history/social studies, science and technical subjects Organization for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects, cont. 5

  6. Standards aim to align instruction with the National Assessment of Educational Progress framework. Emphasis on Informational Text 6

  7. Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science & Technical Subjects • Reading Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies 6-12 • “…the College and Career Readiness Standards and the High School Standards in Literacy work together to define college and career readiness expectations…” • Key Ideas and Details • Craft and Structure • Integration of Knowledge and Ideas 7

  8. Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science & Technical Subjects Integration of Knowledge and Ideas Standard 8 Grades 6-8 Distinguish among facts, reasoned judgment based on research findings, and speculation in a text. Grades 9-10 Assess the extent to which the reasoning and evidence in a text support the author's claim or a recommendation for solving a scientific or technical problem. Grades 11-12 Evaluate the hypotheses, data, analysis, and conclusions in a science or technical text, verifying the data when possible and corroborating or challenging conclusions with other sources of information. 8

  9. Content Standards Define the "math" for each grade level K-12 Different at each grade level Mathematical Practice Standards 8 Standards that are consistent throughout the grades K-12 Describe the depth that students should develop in their practice of math Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Model with mathematics Two Types of Math Standards 9

  10. Functions Overview Understand the concept of... Interpret functions that arise in applications... Build a function... Model... A more balanced combination of procedure and understanding which is reflected in both the Mathematical Practice Standards and the language within the Content Standards Balance Current Standards Common Core Standards 10

  11. Content Shifts at Elementary 11

  12. Adjustments at 8th Grade K-7 Math Standards as augmented prepare students for two sets of standards at 8th grade Both sets of 8th grade standards will prepare students for college and career Having two sets of standards at 8th grade is currently under review at the state level Accountability portion is still to be determined 12

  13. Reorganization of Standards at High School Modeling Algebra Statistics and Probability Numbers and Quantity Geometry Functions Higher Level (AP) Math 13

  14. There will be changes in how the High School courses are organized Even if they have traditional names, courses will be substantially different from our current classes based on the conceptual categories and the mathematical practice standards HS Pathways Under Construction Algebra Modeling Integrated Course I Integrated Course II Integrated Course III LUSD graduation requirement: 2 yrs of math Numbers and Quantity Statistics and Probability Functions Geometry Higher Level (AP) Math 14

  15. SJCOE: Working with District representatives and Sue Gendron from SBAC, to develop 3 year roll out plan Developing modules to help Districts transition to common core (goal: February, 2012) Curriculum Frameworks (Math: 2013, ELA: 2014) Curriculum Adoptions SB140 Publishers develop bridge materials for K-8 in ELA and K-7 in math (projected for summer 2012) Adopt New Materials (Math: 2014?, ELA: 2016?) Planning for the Future 15

  16. Assessment Background • In 2011, California joined the SMARTER • Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC), one of two multi-state consortiums funded by the US Department of Education to develop CCS assessments for federal accountability purposes. 16

  17. There are 30 SBAC Membership States 17

  18. What will the SBAC assess? • The SBAC assessments will cover English language • arts and Mathematics for grades 3-8 and grade 11. • English language arts will assess critical reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in history, science, mathematics, the arts, and English • Mathematics will assess the use of mathematical skills in concepts like field science, technology, and engineering 18

  19. How will we participate in the SBAC? • SBAC summative (end-of-year) assessments are required • SBAC formative and interim assessments will also be made available to member states 19

  20. How will the SBAC and STAR (as we know it) coexist? • The SBAC summative assessments will replace the English language arts and Mathematics CST and CMA for grades 3-8 and grade 11 beginning in 2014-15 20

  21. Questions yet to be answered…. • Will grades 2, 9, and 10 be assessed in English language arts and Mathematics going forward? • Will Science be assessed in grades 5, 8 and 10, and for Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics going forward? • Will History be assessed in grades 8 and 11, and for World History? • Will the CAPA and STS still be administered? • The answers will be determined by the State Legislature • pending a review by the State Superintendent of • Instruction due to be released by December 2012. 21

  22. How will the SBAC impact school accountability? • SBAC summative assessments will be used for • federal accountability as early as the 2014-15 • school year • SBAC summative assessments, as a component of STAR, are most likely to be used as a significant component of state accountability 22

  23. How will the SBAC assessments be administered? • The SBAC assessments are designed to be administered online in a computer adaptive testing format • Fixed-form pencil-and-paper assessments will be made available for the first three years to “help” schools and districts that are not ready to participate in online testing by the 2014-15 school year 23

  24. What are the technology issues that will impact how we participate in the SBAC? • Bandwidth required for administering assessments (e.g. streaming video, writing online essays, constructing short responses, drag-and-drop, online research, and multiple choice) • Hardware & Networked computing resources • Software 24
