  1. What is the number of overweight or obese people in developing nations in 2008?

  2. The answer is…. • 904 million, up nearly 4000% since 1980 says a new Overseas Development Institute Report

  3. birthrate • In order to begin, one of the first measures of population is the birthrate, which is measured in live births per 1000 population. What is the birthrate of your country?

  4. birthrate • The birthrate, of course, varies among world countries and regions. The highest birth rate can be found in Sub-Saharan Africa. What is that rate?

  5. birthrate • If the population of Barbados is 300,000 and the BR is 13, how many babies would I expect to be born in a year? [note: not on 0-100 thermometer]

  6. Total Fertility Rate • Another measure of children is the total fertility rate. This is the average number of children a woman of childbearing years (ages 15-49) would have in her lifetime. What is the fertility rate of your country?

  7. Total Fertility Rate • What is the fertility rate of Northern America? (US and Canada) – hint – decimal.

  8. replacement rate • The US is actually 1.9 and Canada is 1.7, and combined, they are still 1.9. The replacement rate is considered to be 2.1. What do you think a replacement rate means? (and why is it >2?)

  9. death rate • The next measure of interest is the death rate. This is also called the mortality rate. What is the death rate in your country?

  10. age structure • The death rate is very affected by the age structure of a population. “Old” Sweden has 18 percent of its population in ages 65 and older, while “young” Panama has only 6 percent in that elderly age group. So it is not a good way alone to compare the health status of a population. It is important to analyze POPULATION PYRAMIDS to look at the structure of the population.

  11. Dependency ratio • Measuring the percentage of population under age 15 and over age 65 gives us a picture of the composition of a country. The percentage under age 15 in your country? • What are the needs of countries with large percentage of young people in population pyramids?

  12. Dependency ratio • What is the percentage of people over age 65 in your country? • What are the needs of aging populations ?

  13. infant mortality rate • A better statistic you can use to measure the health of a nation is its infant mortality rate. This measures the annual number of deaths among infants from birth to age 1. In the 1800s the worldwide infant mortality rate was between 200-300 deaths per 1000 live births. What is the IMR in your countrytoday? How about 1970?

  14. infant mortality rate There is a wide variety of infant mortality rates in the world. It is one of the reasons it is such a strong indicator of access to health.

  15. rate of natural increase • So let’s talk about a rate that is derived from other rates – the rate of natural increase. This measures the annual rate of population growth (not considering migration). Keep in mind that this is expressed as a percentage, not as a per 1000 number. It is (BR-DR)/10. What do you think the RNI is in your country?

  16. rate of natural increase • Jamaica’s is higher than the US, which is 0.5. Most fall within range of -0.5 to 3. Ukraine is -0.4. What do you think that means?) Pop growth is negative; shrinking. Also note, some countries show 0.0 and others -0.0. What do you think that means? (shows direction – increasing or decreasing)

  17. life expectancy • Hong Kong and Japan have the highest life expectancy in the world. What do you think it is? What is the life expectancy in your country? • What would be common health concerns in countries with high life expectancies?

  18. EXTRA-Non-communicable diseases • How about the other end of the spectrum? People in the more developed countrieswill tend to die from NCDs – Non-communicable diseases, aka chronic disease, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, or cancer.

  19. EXTRA-Non-communicable diseases • What is the rate of Yemen for NCDs?

  20. EXTRA-Non-communicable diseases • What is the rate of Philippines for NCDs?

  21. EXTRA-Non-communicable diseases • The US? These account for a major share of total deaths in MDCs and growing worldwide.

  22. life expectancy • One of the lowest life expectancies can be found in what country? What is that life expectancy? (Would you expect them to have a high IMR? What is the IMR of this country? • What would be common health concerns in countries with high life expectancies?

  23. EXTRA- underweight • Child health can be indicated by the number of children who are underweight (2 std deviations below median weight for age.) Reflects under-nutrition and may cause over ½ of child deaths in developing countries (LDCs).

  24. net migration rate • Population growth is affected not only by birth and death rates, but also by immigration/emigration. Immigration- emigration gives us the net migration rate per 1000 population. What is the net migration rate of your country?

  25. net migration rate • What is the Canada? (yes, they have higher rate of immigration than US)

  26. net migration rate • El Salvador? They have the highest emigration rate in Central America. (Mexico is only -3)

  27. The PRBs World Population Data Sheet is published annually, along with informative presentations. People use these worldwide to inform policymaking and to educate. Take a look the interactive map.
