  1. Lesson 11. Expanding the Ethernet LAN

  2. Objectives At the end of this Presentation, you will be able to:

  3. Compare and contrast the 10BaseT, 10Base2, and 10Base5 Ethernet topologies. Identify the cables, components, and connectors associated with each. Recognize that patch cables contribute to the overall length of the cable segment.

  4. Define Transceiver and explain what it does. Explain what a Repeater does and how it is used. Explain what a Bridge does and how it is used. Show how a Bridge can be used to segment a LAN. Explain where the Transceiver, Repeater, and Bridge operate in the OSI model.

  5. Network+ Domains covered: 1.3 1.5 1.6 2.3

  11. 10BaseT, 10Base2, and 10Base5 are alike in many ways. They are all Ethernet (IEEE-802.3) They all use Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). They all rely on MAC addresses to indicate source and destination nodes. They all use Baseband technology. They use identical packet structures.

  24. Transceiver That part of the network interface that transmits and receives the data signal. The interface to the media. It places 1s and 0s on the media and picks up 1s and 0s from the media.

  36. The Repeater: Takes the packets it receives from one network segment, Regenerates them, Repeats them on another network segment.

  37. Benefits of the Repeater: It can extend the length of a network. It can increase the number of allowed nodes. It can connect different types of cabling together. It can increase fault tolerance.

  38. Fault Tolerance is the ability of a system to continue working after part of the system fails.

  41. The Repeater does not manage traffic; it merely repeats traffic.
