  2. History • Began in Ancient Greece, where the emphasis was on physical fitness • Has been around for over 2000 years, but was introduced in the US in the 1830’s • Further History

  3. Olympic Games • In the Olympic Games in 1896, gymnastics was included but was men only • The male participants competed in: • vault, pommel horse, rings, high bar, and parallel bars • First women’s Olympic team debuted in 1928

USA Gymnastics • Sole national governing body for the sport of gymnastics in the United States • Set rules and policies for gymnastics • Select and train US National team for World and Olympic Games • Promote and develop gymnastics on a grassroots and national level • Member clubs, YMCA’s, park and recreation facilities • Sanction over 3500 competitions a year

How to….Judge for yourself • Identifying a great routine without knowing the Code of Points system: • Height & Distance: for vault, tumbling passes and release moves on the bars height is important, landing distance is especially important on vault • Good form and execution: control throughout the skill, tight body, straight legs, pointed toes • Uniqueness: risky skills and exception artistry will stand out • Stuck landings: should be minimal movement when a gymnast lands at the end of their routine, on floor exercise women are allowed to lunge backwards without a deduction, men are not

Current Athletes • Gabby Douglas won Gold in the all-around in the 2012 Olympics • Aly Raisman won Gold on Floor and Bronze on Beam in the 2012 Olympics • McKayla Maroney won Silver on Vault in the 2012 Olympics even though she had a perfect Vault • Danell Leyva won Bronze in the all-around in the 2012 Olympics
