  6. Genesis 3:1-5, 14 • The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; • but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”

  7. Genesis 3:1-5 • The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! • “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

  17. Satan in the Old Testament

  18. What is in a word? • The word שָׂטָן means “adversary”, “accuser” • Use of this word does not imply a supernatural being

  19. 1 Sam. 29:4 • Make the man go back, that he may return to his place where you have assigned him, and do not let him go down to battle with us, or in the battle he may become an adversary to us.

  20. 2 Sam. 19:22 • David then said, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah, that you should this day be an adversary to me?”

  21. Supernatural Satan

  22. Balaam

  23. Num. 22:22-35 • But God was angry because he was going, and the angel of the Lord took his stand in the way as an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his donkey and his two servants were with him.

  24. Num. 22:22-35 • When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam was angry and struck the donkey with his stick.

  25. Num. 22:22-35 • And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”

  26. Job

  27. Job 1:6-12 • Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.”

  28. Job 1:6-12 • The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” • Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

  29. Job 1:6-12 • “Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

  30. Job 1:6-12 • “But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” • Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.

  31. Job 2:1-7 • Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said,

  32. Job 2:1-7 • “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.” • The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil.

  33. Job 2:1-7 • And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.” • Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

  34. Job 2:1-7 • “However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.” • So the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life.”

  35. Job 2:1-7 • Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

  36. Notes • Sons of God in Job are angelic beings • Satan is a translation of ha satan, which means “the adversary” • This being is allowed into the presence of God and works with God’s permission

  37. 1 Chronicles/2 Samuel Passages

  38. 1 Chron. 21:1-3 • Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel. • So David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan, and bring me word that I may know their number.”

  39. 1 Chron. 21:1-3 • Joab said, “May the Lord add to His people a hundred times as many as they are! But, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord seek this thing? Why should he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”

  40. 2 Sam. 24:1-3 • Now again the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and it incited David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” • The king said to Joab the commander of the army who was with him,

  41. 2 Sam. 24:1-3 • “Go about now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, and register the people, that I may know the number of the people.”

  42. Zechariah

  43. Zech. 3:1-4 • Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.

  44. Zech. 3:1-4 • The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
