Learning Outcomes • OC1: Plan and execute physical modelling process to explore and improve the aesthetic quality of the product being designed • OC2: Build neat and sturdy sketch models suitable for communication and presentation • OC3: Document form exploration process and results using technical and visual vocabularies, allowing others to reconstruct or modify the form by CAD without loosing the design intent • OC4: Demonstrate sensitivity to visual elements and reflective visual skills relevant to future learning • OC5: Articulate plastic representation of ideas and generate critical discourses in related topics • OC6: Have developed an attitude to constantly evaluate practices and trends in the field

Overall Framework • Part 1 • Week 1 - 5 • Get used to form exploration by sketching and model-making interactively • Assignment: A short sketch modelling exercise • Part 2a • Week 6 - 9 • More precise surface sculpting and aesthetic judgement • Assignment: Solid rigid-foam model of good aesthetic quality • Part 2b • Week 10 - 14 • Prototyping skills useful for presentation and later studies.

  8. Assignments • One assignment per module plus design journal • Module 1: A short sketch modelling exercise • Module 2: Solid rigid-foam model of good aesthetic quality • Module 3: Step-by-step fabrication of a hollow plastic casing

Subject Reflection • Most students appreciate the subject • Know more about prototyping and better forecast • Be able to apply only some techniques in projects • Prototyping techniques from different sources are confusing if not contradictory • The heavy workload at the end of semester interferes assignment 3, making the assignment a burden rather than a learning process • The more to teach, the less to master

Subject Ground Rules • Wear safety shoes and protective clothes • Always have your set of tools and stationary around • Appreciate the work-flow and attitude by following the demonstration • Work safely and prudently • Save material • Keep your workplace tidy, and clean up before you leave • Plagiarism and vandalism will result in subject fail
