  2. What is it? • Every day • It’s a natural part of life • Reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges and demands. • Ex-running late for school

  3. What is it? • Perception-is the act of becoming aware through the senses • Ex-disagreement with a friend

  4. What is it? • Your reaction depends on your previous experiences. • Ex-Your in the band and enjoy performing so doing a solo isn’t scary. Previously though you made a mistake in a concert and now you are very nervous for your solo.

Reacting to Stress • Positive Stress = Eustress • Can motivate you • Work harder • Meet demanding deadlines • Negative Stress = Distress • Can interfere with your ability to perform • Might feel distracted, overwhelmed, impatient, frustrated, or even angry. • Harmful to your health • High Blood Pressure

  6. Causes of Stress • Stressor-is anything that causes stress. • Can be real or imagined • Anticipated or unexpected • People, places, events and situations • Stress effects everyone in different ways

  7. Body’s Response to Stressors • ALARM-“Fight or Flight” defend or flee • RESISTANCE- If exposure to a stressor continues, your body adapts and reacts to the stressor. You may perform at a higher level and with more endurance for a brief period. • FATIGUE-If exposure to stress is prolonged, your body loses its ability to adapt. You begin and lose the ability to manage other stressors effectively.

  8. The Alarm Response • Physical Symptoms • Dilated pupils • Increase in perspiration • +Heart rate & pulse • +Blood Pressure • Narrowing of arteries • +Blood flow to brain & muscles • +Muscle tension • Release of blood sugar, fats & cholesterol

  9. Psychosomatic Response • A physical reaction that results from stress rather than from an injury or illness • Physical effects: • Headache • A weakened immune system • High Blood Pressure • Clenching of the jaw or grinding teach • Digestive Disorders
