  1. Cultures from Denmark Shrovetide or as we call it in Danish Fastelavn.

  2. Shrovetide • Shrovetide is the time of year where kids dress up in costumes and runs around from house to house, singing a special song, collecting money or candy. Also it is celebrated by throwing a feast where you eat a bun filled with cream and jam called a ‘fastelavnsbolle’, you hang up a barrel in the attic and use a baseball bat to destroy it. The person who knocks the first peace off will be crowned a queen and the one who knocks it all out is the king. Shrovetide is an old tradition and it is celebrated 40 days before Easter, in old days to begin the fast. We celebrated Shrovetide yesterday, the 18th of February. We at school think it is fun, and we enjoy it. Outside on the playground there will be hanging a barrel with candy in it, and in the old days there would be a cat in the barrel. That’s why in Danish we call it “katten af tønden” – “A cat in the barrel”.
