  2. The Facility • TRIGA-Mark-III reactor (1966) • hot-cell laboratories and various neutronirradiation facilities. • reactor power 250 kW • maximum total flux is 4x1012 cm-2s-1 (central channel). • several in-core and ex-core irradiation channels • maximum uninterrupted irradiation time is 16h. • described in detail in: http://www.rcp.ijs.si/ric/description-a.html M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  3. Types of irradiation • In-core(fast&thermalneutrons) • flux 1-4 x1012 cm-2s-1 • Hardness factor ~0.9 • Sample size < 20x7x1 cm3 • Dry chamber (thermalneutrons, regenerated fast neutrons) • flux<5x108 cm-2s-1 • Bigger samples possible • In-coreoff mode (gamma) • secondary radiation of the core when reactor is off • monitored with RADFETS • 50 Rad/s max, levels off at 20 Rad/s M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  4. Core Irradiation Channels • Mainly used for high fluence irradiations • Triangular channel (TIC) • F-19 channel • ~1016 cm-2 in one hour at full power • Lower fluences at trimmed reactor power • Dosimetry with 10 % accuracy M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  5. Core Irradiation Channels (cont) • Spectrum well known • Threshold activation dosimetry agrees with reactor modeling simulations • Thermal to fast neutron fluxes approximately equal • Activation • Strict material budget • Dosimetry techniques • Threshold activation • Leakage current in Si diodes (NIEL) • Time of irradiation M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  6. Dry chamber • Dry chamber • Thermal neutrons • Fission plate regenerator • Weapon grade 235U plate • Bigger samples • Cooling, power, readout possible • Fluences limited to ~1012-13 cm-2 M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  7. In-core off mode • A convenient gamma source • Delayed decays of fission products • Samples dropped into core during reactor off time • Can be retracted during running to avoid neutrons • Persists for days • 20 kGy (2 Mrad) per day • Can be used to complement NIEL • But no way to get to few MGy M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  8. History • Heavily used by RD-48 and RD-50 from the late 90’s on • Effectively the reference site for neutron irradiations • Up to 2000 samples irradiated per year • Mostly diodes and mini-detectors • 142 NIM papers mentioning “Ljubljana reactor” in Science Direct database M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1

  9. AIDA Projects • Transnational access covers (over 4 years) • 90 projects, • 6 hours per project • 540 h total • 54 visits • 30 % of irradiations • 2 persons per team • 3 days duration • Shipment of radioactive samples • 40 projects, 500 EUR each • Ready to accept projects as of now ! • People knocking on our door • Mail to: Marko.Mikuz@ijs.si or Vladimir.Cindro@ijs.si M.Mikuž: AIDA WP7.1
