  1. Determination of host status of fruits and vegetables to fruit fly (Tephritidae) infestation (2006-031) IPPC Member Consultation 1 July to 20 October 2012

  2. Background • Call for Topics: Determination of host susceptibility for fruit flies (Tephritidae), November 2006 • Added to the List of Topics for IPPC Standards: CPM-2 (2007) • SC approved Specification 50: April 2010 • TPFF drafted: October 2010 • SC reviewed: May 2011 • TPFF revised: August 2012 • SC approved for Member Consultation: April 2012

  3. General Considerations (1) Host status determination is key for fruits and vegetables in internationaltrade The status for hosts of fruit flies is fundamental for pest risk assessment and for determining pest risk management options

  4. General Considerations (2) Three host statuses are described (natural host, nonnatural host, non-host) Determination is based on surveillance under natural conditions and trials under semi-natural field conditions

  5. Drafting Issues Existent regional standards and scientific publications with extensive reviews of host status determination were considered for the ISPM draft An expert was invited to help draft the ISPM

  6. Other relevant information Laboratory trials were excluded from this draft because they present artificial situations where the behavior of fruit flies is highly manipulated Host status definition will be included to ISPM 5 after adoption of this draft The other definitions (natural host, nonnatural host, non-host), are specific to the present draft ISPM and will not be included in ISPM 5
