  3. The word "Valentine" got a meaning of “sweetheart”. However, it eventually come to mean “a written message of love on a piece of paper”

  4. The origin of Valentine’s Day • Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire during Emperor Claudius II of Rome. • St. Valentine was a priest who martyred for refusing to give up Christianity • He was in the jail and was tended by a jailer named Asterius.

  5. He died on February 14, 269 A.D. • In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine • February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages • St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers

  6. Symbols • Love Birds are the symbol of romantic story. • Rose, as the queen of flowers, symbolizes peace and war, love and forgiveness. • Cupid, the son of the Goddess of Love, Venus, is supposedly responsible for people falling in love. • Heart stands for the most profound and noblest of human emotions.

Valentine’sDay in America • After 1723, American Valentines began to grow with the import from England of Valentine "writers." • The first U.S. made Valentines were crafted by a Mount Holyoke College student, Miss Esther Howland. • American school children usually celebrate St. Valentine's Day with a party at school and give Valentine box of chocolates to their friends.
