Eric Swalwell • Democratic Congressman in his 1st term • Currently represents the 15th Congressional District of California (CV, San Ramon, Pleasanton, etc) • Born in Iowa but grew up in Dublin (graduated from Dublin HS in 1999) • Wants Congress to be more tech-savvy—he tweeted out a picture of us when we met with him

  4. Kamala Harris • California Attorney General since 2011 • Gained national attention with her refusal to support the same-sex marriage amendment to the CA state constitution • Obama called her the “best looking attorney general,” then apologized for commenting on her appearance

  5. John Boehner • Speaker of the House of Representatives • Republican representative from Ohio, since 1991 • In charge of assigning committees and deciding which bills to debate • As Speaker, he is second in line for the presidency

  6. Hillary Clinton • Former US Secretary of State • Will possibly be a 2016 presidential candidate • Most traveled Secretary of State in US history • Narrowly lost Democratic presidential nomination in 2008 • Former Senator from NY and Former First Lady

  7. Rush Limbaugh • Conservative radio talk show host • Influential in keeping the Republicans focused and right wing (very conservative) • Is opposed to the Affordable Care Act. President Obama said that Republicans in Congress are too concerned about what Limbaugh says about them

  8. Dianne Feinstein • Senior Senator from California, Democrat, reelected last year • Holds the record for winning the most votes in a Senate election • Former mayor of San Francisco • Sent out her first tweet last year when her challenger in the election said she was out of touch

Edward Snowden • Former NSA employee accused of treason • Worked as a computer expert, leaked top-secret details of mass surveillance programs (used by the British and US) • US revoked his passport after he left Hawaii for Hong Kong, then went to Russia • Russia granted him asylum for one year but US wants him extradited for trial

  10. Barbara Boxer • Junior Senator from California • Currently serving her fourth term in office • Lobbying for a $10 minimum wage • Meets with CV students on Close Up trip almost every year

  11. Chris Christie • Republican Governor of New Jersey • Was the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention • Has nominated an openly gay man to be on the NJ Supreme Court and a Muslim to be on state Superior Court • Will possibly be a 2016 presidential candidate

  12. John Kerry • US Secretary of State, appointed January 2013 • Former Senator from Massachusetts, Democrat • Ran for President in 2004 • Currently dealing with Syria and the use of chemical weapons in the Civil War

  13. Chuck Hagel • Secretary of Defense, appointed January 2013 • Former Senator from Nebraska, Republican • Has stated that US is “ready to go” regarding Syria and that US does not need UN approval

  14. Barack Obama • First non-white President of the US, his first inauguration was attended by approx. 2,000,000 people • Former senator from Illinois • Has averaged a 49% approval rating for his presidency • Spoke at 50th anniversary of March on Washington

  15. Jerry Brown • Current Governor of CA • Has held many political offices in the past: Mayor of Oakland, 1998-2006 Attorney General of CA, 2007-11 CA Governor, 1975-83 CA Secretary of State, 1971-75

Anthony Weiner • Former Democratic Congressman who resigned after mistakenly publicly tweeting an inappropriate picture of himself that was not intended for his wife • Now running for NYC mayor, saying that he’d changed, but then new images that he’d recently sexted were made public • He has refused to drop out of the race
