  1. Operation MakeScholarlyPaperRock: Phase 2: Addressing Other Points of View

  2. Review • Concession: Agreeing or acknowledging a point on the other side of an issue • Not a weakness! • Strengthens ethical appeal • Makes you seem understanding, knowledgeable • Actually makes you stronger

  3. Where? • Concession located in first paragraph of the argument • Bingo/Bango/Bongo • After transition/topic sentence

  4. Getting to the Con • Use a transition word/phrase to move from topic of pp to your concession • although • admittedly • it is true that • it is often argued that • Ex: "It is often argued that school uniforms improve academic performance."

  5. Opposing View: Mini-Argument • Sentence 1: Transition/topic sentence • Sentence 2: Concrete detail* • That’s right, you need a CD for your opposition • Sentence 3: Commentary • Explain the CD just like any other CD Ex. "It is often argued that school uniforms improve academic performance.Students are less distracted by worrying about having the right clothes to fit in, which means they can concentrate more fully on academic subjects“ (Childs, 93).

  6. I Like Big “Buts” & I Cannot Lie • After commentary, intro your rebuttal: • Transition words are useful • “Nevertheless,” “however,” or “what this opinion fails to take into account is that…” • Now move into first point of your argument • You may need to reorganize your 3 points based on topic of con

  7. Uniform Example “…It is often argued that school uniforms improve academic performance. In fact, a study by Johnson and Beal found that scores improved in schools with uniforms (Johnson & Beal).Students are less distracted by worrying about having the right clothes to fit in, which means they can concentrate more fully on academic subjectsThis argument does not take into account the fact thatteenagers will worry about their looks no matter what they are wearing (Childs, 93). They will try to modify and accessorize their school uniforms, as well as changing their hairstyles to fit in with their friends. School uniforms can not stop teenagers from worrying about their appearances." Red – Con TS/CS (transition)Blue – Con CD Gold - Rebuttal Green – Con CM

  8. Below Standards Examples “Marine pollution abuses and poisons animals and alters the food chain. It takes more energy to recycle plastics than it does to use all new materials, but in not doing so, animals live in the ocean are constantly being bombarded with garbage. “ Concession is there, but why below standard?

  9. Below #2 “Treating animals badly would produce unreliable results. There are some researchers who treat animals just fine.A lab in the United Kingdom houses marmosets in cages nearly nine feet high and are designed specifically with the needs of the species in mind. Not all research facility cage their animals in cages nine feet high, though...” Con & rebuttal present – what’s missing?

  10. @ Standard “It is apparent that child labor is helpful, not only to the bottom line of the manufacturing companies, but also to the workers and consumers by providing profits, salaries, and lower priced products.Unfortunately, not everyone shares this outlook. In fact, there are many who oppose not only the concept of children working, but also oppose the corporations that hire kids as their employees. These protestors enjoy spouting their views on "saving the children from exploitation" in the form advertising campaigns and boycotts (Tean, 23)... “

  11. @ Standard “A common misconception is that it is very unlikely for an innocent person to be convicted of a crime, when in fact, many cases prove that not only some convicted, but they are executed as well. DNA evidence has greatly reduced the likelihood of an innocent person being convicted and sentenced to death. In the united States, since 1973, 122 have been exonerated from death row due to proven innocence (Inevitability of Error).”

  12. Timed Practice • Write the topic sentence of one of your arguments • Use con transition Although, admittedly, etc. • Con CD (from your notes – please cite!) • Con CM Use golden ratio (1:2) • Rebuttal However, nevertheless, but, etc.

  13. Finished? Have a peer assess whether or not you have all the necessary components in addressing the opposition. They must sign off your paper before you can turn it in today. Peers: If your partner doesn’t have all the parts, don’t sign off!Help them out!
