  2. Google What to expect from the search giant in 2013

  3. Search Engine Optimization • The Internet hosts over 600 million websites and the ability for users to find your website can impact your overall business • New Google updates meant to keep spam out of search results will also make linking more difficult • The shift towards mobile computing will also impact SEO

  4. Social Media • Google+ is a very well designed social media site but still underperforms when compared to Facebook or Twitter • Businesses utilize Google+ the most, likely because having a Google+ profile will help them to the top of search results • Google+ has some fun features such as live video chat that can go mobile as well

  5. Natural Human-Computer Interfaces • This is a movement away from the mouse and keyboard and towards more natural methods of interaction • Natural HCI include touch, voice, gestures, and eye movements • Google Voice allows you to speak to your phone and for it to respond to your verbal requests

  6. Mobile Computing • Mobile computing is expected to account for half of all web traffic by 2014 • Google has kept up with this trend and is active on Android phones as the search engine of choice • The phrase “Google It!” has become part of our everyday vocabulary • Google has revealed the next mobile platform…

  7. Google Glass This invention combines mobility with the most natural HCI yet! Turn it on with a nod, take a picture with a wink… Watch a quick demonstration of Google Glass at Glass How to : Getting Started - Google Glass Official hands on demo - YouTube

  8. Adobe: The Indifferent & The Bad TeLesha Thompson

  9. Who is Adobe? • Adobe is the global leader in digital imaging software. • Stationed in California, Adobe has various types of application software.

  10. Well-Known Products • Photoshop • Flash Player • Shockwave • Illustrator • Dreamweaver (The Web side)

  11. Apple vs Adobe • Apple and Adobe had a falling-out in 2010 concerning Adobe’s Flash Player on Apple’s mobile devices. • Apple’s official statement is located on the Apple site, where Steve Jobs kindly said that Flash is “unnecessary”

  12. Downsides • Price • Application bugs • Possible security issues • Difficulty for experienced users to use “simplified” upgrades

  13. Plus side • Professional digital images • Creating a larger market for open source products • Free products such as Flash Player and Shockwave which allow applications and videos to run

  14. Corporate Control on Web Development Microsoft needs to back off

  15. Web Development Language: ASP.Net • Web Development Tool: Visual Studio • Web Development Platform: Windows Server • Database back-end: SQL Server

  16. Visual Studio • “Let me get that for you” approach. • Less expertise • Tightly-controlled framework • Expensive • IntelliSense • All leads to poor code, poor code analysis, and poor code maintenance.

  17. Windows Server • Condescending… • Lacking in customizability • Dumbed down for less expertise • Expensive • Forced upgrades • Lack of Portability • Recycled and poorly implemented ideas

  18. SUA – My Nerd Rant • SUA – Subsystem for Unix Administration • Microsoft’s “retrofit” around Unix Applications – Use KornShell • KornShell replaced by bash in the early 90s. ?

  19. SQL Server • Expensive • Forced Upgrades • To its credit, a fairly decent database • Compared to MySql, more powerful, but also more cumbersome. • Lacks portability • ONLY Windows Server
