  1. Major and Minor scales By Catherine Villabroza

  2. Have a go... Discuss with your partner: • What is a scale? • WHat is the difference between a Harmonic minor, a melodic minor and a natural minor? • What makes a minor a minor? • How to writ a key signature?

  3. What is a scale? According to www.Earmaster.com, “‘Scale’ comes from a Latin word which means ladder. A scale is the tonal basis of music. It is a set of tones from which you can build melodies and harmonies. The tones of a scale are ordered according to their pitch.” To put simply, it is a group of 8 notes going up and down the stave. The purpose of a scale is so that you can make a melody in different keys. Scales can either sound happy (Major) or sad (Minor).

  4. So what makes a scale? Major Scales: • They sound happy • There is a specific pattern of tones and semitones in a major scale. In all major scales the pattern is: • T-T-S-t-t-t-s Minor Scales: • They sound sad • The tone pattern for a minor scale varies depending on the type of minor scale

  5. So, what’s the difference between a harmonic minor and a natural minor? A harmonic minor is the easiest minor. All harmonic minors have their 7th note sharpened. Their tone pattern is:T-S-T-T-S-T-S The natural minor uses the pattern of:T-S-t-t-s-t-t The melodic has different tone patterns going up and down. Going up it is a major scale with the 3rd being flattened and going down is the same as a natural minor. So the tone pattern is:T-S-T-T-T-T-S Going up T-T-S-T-T-S-T Going Down

  6. Writing Key signatures A key signature lets us write a scale without having to keep writing sharps, flats and naturals. A key signature has one major and minor scale paired to it. So C major would be paired to A minor because there are no black notes (Besides the G SHarp) Writing key signatures can be hard as there is an order. SO there are two rhymes to help with writing key signatures. If you’re writing a sharp signature:Father Charles goes Down and Ends BAttle
