  1. The Crucified King

  2. The King Is Resurrected • Early Sunday morning, the women (Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, Salome, and some other women) took their spices and set out for the tomb. • On the way there was a great earthquake and an angel came and rolled back the stone and then sat on it. • His appearance was like lightning, and the guards were so afraid that they became like dead men.

  3. The King Is Resurrected • As the women approached the tomb, they wondered how they would roll the stone away. • Once they got to the tomb, they found that the stone had already been rolled back. • While they were standing there confused, two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. • The women were afraid and hid their faces, but the men told them that Jesus had risen. The men reminded them that Jesus said He would be crucified and rise again on the third day.

  4. Easter Sunday The King Rises from the Death And the angel said, “Don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.” —Mark 16:6

  5. Easter Sunday The Women see two angels In the drawing the angelic beings are shown seated on the bench to illustrate John’s account. These same two angels are also drawn in a standing position as they were seen by several woman in Luke’s account.

  6. The King Is Resurrected • The women rushed off to tell the disciples. • Of course the disciples didn’t believe them, but Peter and John do get up and run to the tomb. • John arrived at the tomb first and saw the linen cloths lying in the tomb. • When Peter arrived, he looked in and saw the linen cloths. The cloth that was wrapped around Jesus’ head was lying all by itself.

  10. The King Appears to His Disciples • The disciples went home and were amazed at what had happened; Mary Magdalene remained behind and wept outside of the tomb. Watch this little Video

  11. The King Appears to His Disciples • Paul writes, that after appearing to Mary, Jesus appeared to Peter, then to 500 of his followers at one time, and then to his brother James. • Meanwhile, some of the soldiers who were guarding the tomb went and told the chief priests what had happened. • Once they had assembled with the elders, the chief priests bribed the soldiersand told them to tell everyone that Jesus’ disciples stole the body during the night while they were asleep.

  12. The King Appears to His Disciples • That same day, two disciples were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus when Jesus joined them, but they didn’t recognize Him. • Jesus asked why they were sad, so they told Him all about the events that had taken place. • Then Jesus explained to them that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer in order to enter His glory. (About 4-5 Miles)

  13. The King Appears to His Disciples • On the way to Emmaus, Jesus explained the Scriptures to the two disciples, perhaps using the same prophecies from the Psalms and Isaiah that we already looked at. • As they came to the village, the disciples invited Jesus to lodge with them for the night. • At the meal, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, and then the two disciples immediately recognized Him; • Jesus, then, vanished from their sight.

  14. The King Appears to His Disciples • Immediately, the two disciples ran to Jerusalem, find the others gathered together, and told them what had happened on the road and how Jesus was revealed to them in the breaking of the bread. • Suddenly, Jesus appeared to them… Watch the Video

  15. The King Is Risen Do you believe it? • “Do you believe because you have seen Me?” Jesus asked His disciples. • “Blessed are those who believe even though they have not seen.” • You and I are blessed more than Jesus’ own disciples, because we believe without first seeing! • Do you know why? Did you hear that? Because, that is the essence of faith!

  16. “The essence of our faith!”

  17. Do you believe?

  18. He’s Risen!
