  1. Jan 31st - Do Now • Pass in your Bluest Eye rewrites. Your newest copy should be stapled on top of your edited copy. • Take out your “Intro to Analysis” worksheet (this was completed last week). What do we already know about syntax?

Agenda • Syntax (length, kind, arrangement, variety; problems) • Syntax handout: Charlotte’s web; Bradbury’s “I see you never.” • Practice analysis (300 words in 30 min) Goals: Students will be able to characterize sentence types and constructions and their effects. To closely read a passage for syntactical analysis.

  3. Sentence Variety • Describing Sentence Structure – Telegraphic – shorter than 5 words in length Short – approximately 5 words in length Medium – approximately 18 words in length Long and involved – 30+ words in length

  4. Kinds of sentences Declarative sentences – make statements • Ex. The Statue of Liberty stands in New York Harbor Interrogative sentences – ask questions • Ex. Did you know that the Statue of Liberty is made of copper? Imperative sentences – make commands • Ex. Go see the Statue of Liberty. Exclamatory sentences – communicate strong emotion or surprise • Ex. Climbing the Statue of Liberty is exciting! Conditional sentences – express wishes or conditions • Ex. If you were to climb to the top of the statue, then you could share the breathtaking feeling experienced by many hopeful immigrants.

  7. Emphasis is forgotten by the time the reader reaches the end of the sentence. Wilbur awoke and looked for Charlotte when the first light came into the sky and the sparrows stirred in the trees, when the cows rattled their chains and the rooster crowed and the early automobiles went whispering along the road.

  8. “I See You Never” by Ray Bradbury (turn to pg She remembered a visit she had once made to some Mexican border towns—the hot days, the endless crickets leaping and falling or lying dead and brittle like the small cigars in the shop windows’ and the canals taking river water out to the farms, the dirt roads, the scorched fields, the little adobe houses, the bleached clothes, the eroded landscape. She remembered the silent towns, the warm beer, the hot, thick foods each day. She remembered the slow, dragging horses and the parched jack rabbits on the road. She remembered the iron mountains and the dusty valleys and the ocean beaches that spread hundreds of miles with no sound but the waves—no cars, no buildings, no nothing.

  9. Now it is your turn… You have 20 minutes to write a 300 word analysis of Bradbury’s “I see you never.” Individually: Explicate the passage and write your response. In Groups: Share your responses with three-four of your peers. You may have to choose one sample to read aloud to the whole class, so work together to revise it as needed. Be prepared to discuss how Bradbury’s use of diction contributes to tone.

  11. Homework • Bleak House analysis (500 words) • Study your assigned advanced syntactical technique. Find a creative way to teach this one technique. You will have 10 min tomorrow to work in pairs before you have to teach your technique.
