War in Europe • Axis powers attacked Africa in order to control the Suez Canal; which was the British lifeline • Battle of El Alemein (Oct.1942): turned the tide in Africa in favor of the allies. Erwin Rommell (desert fox) was forced to retreat. • Battle of Stalingrad (sept. 1942): turned the war in the Eastern Europe • D-Day (June 6, 1944): allies forces land on the beaches of Normandy, France and launch an offensive attack on Germany • Battle of the Bulge: last German offensive • May 8, 1945 VE day Germany surrenders • Big Three • Roosevelt (US) • Joseph Stalin (Soviet Union) • Winston Churchill (England

War in the Pacific • Pearl Harbor (Dec 7, 1941) Japan launched surprise attack on the US • US declares war on Japan and enters WW II • Roosevelt declares it “A date which will live in infamy.” • Battle of Coral Sea: stopped Japanese advance to Australia • Battle of Midway (june, 1942): ended Japanese superiority in the Pacific • Island Hopping – allies strategy taking key islands • Battle of Leyte Gulf: largest naval battle in history • Okinawa: island battle became the bloodiest fight in the pacific

  6. US reluctant to invade Japan because fear of loss of men • Japan refused to surrender • August 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima • August 9, 1945 the second atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki • September 2, 1945 V-J Day, Japan surrenders unconditionally; ended WW II.
