  1. RTL Breakdown 8th Grade

  2. Why Write a Response to Literature • Demonstrates to the teacher/professor what you took from a story. • Provides insight to the way that you think • Offers a true assessment of your language skill (grammar)

  3. What to Include in an Essay • Introduction • 3 body paragraphs that include concrete details and commentary • Conclusion

  4. Introduction Format Write a HOOK to grab your reader’s attention. Use the worksheet provided to practice different ways of doing this. Include a TAG (title/author/genre) and transition into a brief SUMMARY of the story. The summary should be 2-3 sentences. End your introduction with a THESIS STATEMENT. For this particular essay, your thesis statement must highlight how the author uses literary devices to illustrate the theme you have selected.

  5. Body Paragraphs Use your TOPIC SENTENCE to introduce the literary element that you will be highlighting in the body paragraph. TRANSITION into your CONCRETE DETAIL. Your transition should give the reader some background information about the context of the quote you have selected. The CONCRETE DETAIL (Textual Evidence/Quote) must be an example of the literary element mentioned in the TOPIC SENTENCE. Be sure to cite all concrete details correctly. Write 2-3 sentences of COMMENTARY, aka analysis/justification. The commentary is your opportunity to explain how the CD proves the THEME of the story. The theme is stated in your THESIS. Conclude your paragraph with a final thought on the topic of your paragraph.

  6. The End of It: Conclusions Begin your conclusion by RESTATING YOUR THESIS. That means that you must write your thesis in NEW words. SUMMARIZE the main points of your essay. You may also tell what people (in general) can learn from the theme. This is a good place to connect the story to other pieces of literature that you are familiar with. End with a CONCLUDING SENTENCE. That means you should connect back to your creative hook; leave the reader satisfied with a final, thought-provoking statement.
