  3. “Oh? How do you suffer, Abby?” (155) . • Put the period after the parentheses, • Keep exclamation points or question marks (such as above), but do not keep periods in the quote. • Mix the quote into a sentence along with your own words Proper Quote Format

Use proper punctuation around quote • Example: Abigail shows her indifference when she says, “I am completely indifferent” (22). • This is clearly shown when Danforth says “You have seen the Devil, have you not?“ (122) • Proctor’s transformation is complete when he says, “I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor” (151).   5. Only put the part of the quote that you need in your paper. There is no need to write long quotations. • If you need to cut out a middle you may use brackets. BUT ONLY IN THE MIDDLE, NOT AT THE BEGINNING OR END. • Example: Hale’s concern is apparent when he says, “Woman, plead with him […] What profit him to bleed?” (152) Proper Quote Format
