Weathering is a process that breaks down rocks on Earth’s surface. Two main types: Mechanical (Physical) Chemical. Weathering. Rock is PHYSICALLY broken into smaller pieces Can be caused by: Freezing and thawing Plant growth. Mechanical/Physical Weathering.

  1. Weathering is a process that breaks down rocks on Earth’s surface. • Two main types: • Mechanical (Physical) • Chemical Weathering

  2. Rock is PHYSICALLY broken into smaller pieces • Can be caused by: • Freezing and thawing • Plant growth Mechanical/Physical Weathering

  3. Abrasion (grinding away of rock by other rock particles) • Actions of animals Causes of Physical Weathering (con’t)

  4. When rocks undergo chemical changes (the minerals that make up the rock change) • Occurs due to: • Water (dissolves minerals in the rocks) • Oxygen (rocks containing iron go through oxidation, producing rust) • Acids (acid rain, other sources) – quickly weathers rocks Chemical Weathering

  5. Depends on: • Size - Smaller pieces of rock weather faster (more surface area) • Type of rock – different rocks contain different minerals that weather at different rates • Climate – wet climates and warm climates cause faster weathering Rate of Weathering
