  1. What is collective identity and how is it mediated? You should have an introduction and a paragraph or two about TV (Skins)

  2. HYPERDERMIC NEEDLE Cohen: Moral Panics youth culture and its perceived possible threat to order and social rules Agenda Setting: the media has the power focus public discussion on particular issues. Again, it can’t tell us what to think but it can tell us what to think about. Gramsci: Anything that does not fit with the ruling class’ hegemony or ‘normality’ is segregated. Hegemony is a site of constant struggle - societies are constantly debating what is and isn't acceptable. Althusser: The Media is part of the ideological state apparatus who transmit dominant ideology to the people Acland: Media’s representation of youth is used to maintain social order, or in other words keep young people in their place Giroux: Media representations of young people have become an 'empty category'. Because they are constructed by adults, reflecting adults concerns, anxieties and needs Gauntlett: Individuals will 'pick and mix' their media and can select what they want to use in construction of own identity

  3. The Mail Online represents youth as deviant and reliant on drugs, alcohol and smoking (2014). It represents youth in such a way that it appeals to adults instead of young people themselves. For example it refers to youth as ‘youngsters’ throughout the article. The use of this address term belittles and patronises youth – making them appear younger then they may wish to be seen and heightening the fear factor for the adult reader. Youth are made to seem more vulnerable and at risk, whilst at the same time being demonised for ‘the amount drunk by youngsters’.
