  1. Spinal Cord and Major Nerves Ch. 7d

  2. Spinal Cord • Continuation of the Brain Stem • 31 pairs of spinal nerves connect to different body parts • Send sensory impulses from the body to the brain • Send motor impulses from the brain to the body

  3. Spinal Cord • Nerve Plexuses • Cervical • Diaphragm & muscles of shoulder and neck • Brachial • Shoulder and arm muscles • Lumbar • Lower abdomen, hip, upper leg • Sacral • Some hip & upper leg, mostly lower leg and foot

  4. Quick Quiz 1 of 4 • Name the four Nerve Plexuses • Describe what would occur if the spinal cord were severed just above the Lumbar Plexus

  5. Major Nerves • Crainal Nerves • 12 Pairs of nerves mostly serve the head • Olfactory Nerves: carry smell and taste sensory impulses to brain • Optic Nerves: carry visual sensory impulses to brain • Oculomotor Nerves: carry motor impulses from brain to eye • Facial Nerves: control facial movement

  6. Quick Quiz 2 of 4 • What do the Olfactory Nerves do? • What nerves make the eyes move?

  7. Major Nerves • Body Nerves • Median Nerve • Runs from Brachial Plexus all the way down the arm to the wrist • Sciatic Nerve • Large Nerve from Sacral Plexus runs all the way down the back of the leg • Femoral Nerve • Large nerve in hip that branches out to several smaller nerves in leg

  8. Quick Quiz 3 of 4 • Where is the Median Nerve located? • Why do you think the femoral nerve is so large?

  9. Autonomic Nervous System • Sympathetic Division • “fight or flight” division • Stress response to increase body activities • Higher blood pressure and heart rate • Parasympathetic Division • “resting and digesting” division • Promotes normal body functions and return to normal. • Conserves Energy

  10. Quick Quiz 4 of 4 • Give an example of a situation that would lead to an sympathetic nervous system response. • What kinds of activities are the responsibility of the parasympathetic nervous system?
