Trophic Level Notes

Trophic Level Notes. Energy Flows. Energy flows through an ecosystem as one organism eats another Group organisms based on how they obtain energy (producer vs. consumer) Trophic level is where they are in the sequence of energy transfers. Why is energy transfer so low?

  1. Trophic Level Notes

  2. Energy Flows • Energy flows through an ecosystem as one organism eats another • Group organisms based on how they obtain energy (producer vs. consumer) • Trophic level is where they are in the sequence of energy transfers

  3. Why is energy transfer so low? • Some organisms escape being eaten • Some molecules can’t be broken down by predators • Example a mountain lion won’t eat antlers, hooves or hair • Some energy lost as heat

  4. Higher trophic levels contain less energy and can support fewer individuals

  5. Food chain = single pathway of what eats what

  6. Food web = all the food chains together
