  2. Verbs in the present tense In Spanish verbs are categorized by their endings In Spanish there are 3 types of verbs.. AR, IR, ER You can categorize verbs based on the last two letters of the infinitive form of a verb.

  3. 3 Verb Categories • Hablar (to talk) ….. (AR) • Dormir (to sleep) …. (IR) • Comer (to eat) … (ER)

  4. Categorize • Caminar: to walk • Conocer: to know • Cocinar: to cook • Beber: to drink • Tocar: to play (instrument) • Vivir: to live • Caminar: to walk …(AR) • Conocer: to know (ER) • Cocinar: to cook (AR) • Beber: to drink (ER) • Tocar: to play (AR) (instrument) • Vivir: to live (IR)

  5. Forms • For each verb there are 5 common forms … • Since each form is different, it is not necessary to use a subject pronoun. The verb endings identifiy who the subject is. • Analyze the following chart with Spanish/English Subject pronouns

  6. AR verbs have specific form endings To conjugate AR verbs means to transform the infinitive to include the subject In English you say… I speak You speak He speaks We speak They speak In Spanish you say… Hablo Hablas Habla Hablamos Hablan

To conjugate step by step • Take the infinitive • Identify the verb (ar, er, ir) • Remove the last two letters from the infinitive • Add the appropriate ending based on the form that you need. • Bailar (to dance) • Bailar (AR) • Bail • Bailo… I dance • Bailas… You dance • Baila… He/she dances • Bailamos… We dance • Bailan … They dance
