  2. I.) Kennedy’s Vision for Progress A.) New Frontier: Kennedy’s legislative program 1. Stimulating the Economy 2. Addressing Poverty 3. Race to the Moon 4. Civil Rights

  3. B.) The Economy 1. 1960 America is in a recession 2. Kennedy suggests “deficit spending” a. increase government spending and lower taxes to stimulate economic growth 3. increase minimum wage to $1.25 4. extended unemployment insurance 5. give assistance to cities w/high unemployment

  4. C.) Poverty (Home and Abroad) 1. Kennedy suggests two foreign aid programs: a. Peace Corps: volunteers travel to developing nations to give assistance b. Alliance for Progress: offer economic & technical assistance to Latin American countries 2. Kennedy calls for a “national assault on causes of poverty” a. proposes to cut taxes by over $10 billion

  5. D.) Civil Rights 1. Kennedy presents Congress with civil rights bill in 1963 a. Blocked in Congress by southern Democrats b. Leads to Civil Rights March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. will his “I Have a Dream” speech

  6. E.) The Space Race 1. April 12, 1961: Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin becomes first human in space 2. May 5, 1961: Alan Sheppard becomes first American in space Result: Kennedy says “U.S. will send a man to the moon”

  7. NASA (National Aeronautics & Space Administration) build: a. launch facilities in Cape Canaveral, Florida b. mission control center in Houston, Texas

  8. July 20, 1969: NASA lands first man on the moon (Neil Armstrong) • Results of space program: a. Universities expand science programs b. Increase in federal funding for research & development c. New industries & technology d. Space & Defense industries develop
