  3. Les Salutations Greetings • Bonjour = Hello • Bonjour literally means “good day”. It is used as a greeting before 5 P.M. The expression is used in both formal and casual contexts. • Bonsoir = Hello, Good Evening • Bonsoir literally means “good evening”. It is used as a greeting after 5 P.M. The expression is used in both formal and informal contexts. • Salut= Hello, Hi • “Salut” is used as a greeting strictly in casual contexts. It is the equivalent of our “hi” as opposed to “hello.”

  4. Formal vs Informal Bonjour and Bonsoir may be used both in formal and informal situations. In formal situations, add - Madame (Ma'am) - Monsieur (Sir) - Mademoiselle (Miss) to your greeting: Bonjour, Monsieur! Bonsoir, Madame! Bonjour, Mademoiselle! Salut! Is used strictly in informal situations: Salut, Monique! Salut, Claude!

Je m’appelle Marie Dupont. -Enchanté, Madame. Comment allez-vousaujourd’hui? -Je vaistrèsbien, merci. Et vous? -Trèsbien, merci. Informal: -Salut. Je m’appelle Anne. -Enchantée, je m’appelle Marie. Çava? - Pas mal, et toi? -Bien, merci.

  8. Saying Goodbye Au revoir = Goodbye. Used in formal and informal situations. Salut = Bye. Used in informal situations. Ciao = Bye. Used in informal situations. Formal and informal: À bientôt! = See you soon! À plus tard! = See you later! À cesoir! = See you this evening (tonight)! À demain! = See you tomorrow!
