  2. Purpose • To design a putter system for avid players who suffer from a spinal cord injury or a neurodegenerative disease • With this goal in mind, we were inspired to create a system, IcePhoenix777, whose sole purpose is to achieve the best putting result for the target audience • It may not be what Tiger Woods uses, but it is definitely a cost-effective, well-functioning product • Other than being just a simple putter, our product is environmentally friendly.

  3. Ideas • The target audience cannot physically apply the optimal force to putt the ball, but our putter incorporates other forces to lend them a hand • We used the force of gravity (Fg) for its constant acceleration (9.81ms-2) • The bob, or the Styrofoam cup, was inspired by Newton’s cradle, as it will accelerate from a certain height, to reach maximum velocity before hitting the golf ball • The reason we chose to use a pendulum is because it will undergo centripetal acceleration as well as acceleration due to gravity.

  4. Ideas (con’t) • This will allow the ball to have the maximum velocity without any human interaction • In order for the collision to be optimal, all or most of the kinetic energy of the pendulum will be transferred to the golf ball, resulting in an elastic collision • Unfortunately there will be energy and momentum misallocated due to the Styrofoam Cup, as it will absorb some of the momentum

  5. Ideas (con’t) • We chose the Styrofoam cup to guide the golf to go straight. • The use of a paper cup is cost-efficient. At first we considered Styrofoam board, and cardboard, however it is not very cost effective. • We can adjust how far the golf ball will travel by adjusting the height of the pendulum. This can be done easily, by lifting the pendulum towards the farthest paper cup away from the golf ball.

  6. Design • We believe that using a pendulum is easier to both aim and to achieve repeated results • A pendulum is consistent and in a game of golf, it is very important to be able to hit the hole every time • Whereas, an elastic band can hit the golf ball at a different angle.

  7. Behind the Scenes • Inspiration: Bob at its highest point, its gravitational potential energy is at its highest. Eg=mgh, where height is the difference between the ground and its position. The bob has zero kinetic energy at the moment. • The Bob striking the golf ball: • Eg=0, there is no height difference between the ground and the bob • Ek= Maximum . (Ek= 1/2mv2) • In a perfect world, all of the gravitational energy will be transformed into kinetic energy.

  8. Cost Efficiency • We stayed away from the higher priced materials such as Styrofoam blocks, PVC pipes, and cardboard • Our total cost is $800, which is $1700below our budget
