  4. #1 : Understand Your Users • We don’t know about Arabic.. • Use our network! • 1. Korean professors who teach Arabic • Contact SNU, Yonsei University, and Korea University • Goal : getting general information about Arab • 2. ICU(our Home Univ.) students from Arab • Contact through facebook, intra-mail, and e-mail • Goal : getting a specific idea(What they need)

  5. #1 : The Result • Mail from Korean professor • Got really good information from one Professor • What we got(Information) • There are lots of unlettered people • They think they should follow Koran’s grammar. • Use original Arabic only at public place • General people usually use their own dialect • Levant / Arabian Pen. / North Africa • General Arabic / Many people use English / French

  6. #1 : The Result • E-Mails from ICU students • AL-ShboulBashar (Grad student) • “Users of iPhone and SmartPhones in the Arab World is more than you can image” • “Arabic Language structure is really complicated” • Got some more information from Fahad Al-Mutlaq, Malaz Kserawi, KaizAzz, and Haitham Ha. • “Some Arabic people tend to write messages in Arabic sounds but in Roman characters, if you can do that, I think it will be a killer application.”

  7. #1 : The Result • Some Arabic person who has G1 phone • Ask them ‘What do you want?’ • Most of them say… “I want to use SMS message in Arabic” • Some of them said… “I don’t know about English, but I got English SMS every-time…” • Search the Android Market • They just publish simple SMS reader for Arabic people…

  8. #2 : Formalize our Understanding • What we got from #1 • Lots of Arabic people want to use Arabic as freely as possible. • Original Arabic is really hard to write. • Levant / Arabian Pen. / North Africa people use different languages to each other. • What we have? • HMT, ASR, TTS, etc… • So… What we want to make? • SMS send/receive program for Arabic people!

  9. #3-1 : Prototype • What our program (will) have • Basic Part • SMS Send • SMS Receive • SMS Auto-catch • Language Translation • Use HMT(Arabic<->English) to understand SMS • Use HMT for sending SMS even the users don’t know about that Language. • Language Writing • Use ASR for writing Arabic/English

  10. #3-2 : Iterate • Some Issues while we are doing that… • Android Emulator doesn’t support ‘Send SMS’ part • ‘android.provider.telephony.sms’ is removed. • Need way for querying SMS inbox some other way • Arabic language Handling • How to show, right-to-left ordering... • AppTek service. • doesn’t support French….(T_T) • Working time… • Translating Error??(En->Ar->En…)
