REPEAT STATIONS MEASUREMENTS IN UKRAINE IN 2006

This workshop discusses the findings of the European Geomagnetic Repeat Station Survey conducted in Ukraine from 2005 to 2006. The workshop focuses on the compilation of magnetic maps, construction of global and regional models of the magnetic field, investigations of lithosphere influence on secular variations, and the dynamics and kinematics of secular variations.

  1. 3rd MagNetE WORKSHOPON EUROPEAN GEOMAGNETIC REPEAT STATION SURVAY 2005 – 2006Bucharest, 14 – 16 May 2007 V.Maksymchuk1, V.Tregubenko2, Yu.Horodyskyy1, M.Orlyuk3, E.Nakalov1, I.Chobotok1 REPEAT STATIONS MEASUREMENTS IN UKRAINE IN 2006 1 – Carpathian Branch of Subbotin Institute of Geophysics NAS Ukraine; Naukova str.3-b, 79060 Lviv, Ukraine 2 – Ukrainian Geological Prospecting State Institute; Avtozavodska str.78, 04114 Kyiv, Ukraine 3 - Subbotin Institute of Geophysics NAS Ukraine; Palladin av.32, 03680 Kyiv, Ukraine • Members of the Project: • Carpathian Branch of Subbotin Institute of Geophysics NAS Ukraine, Lviv • Ukrainian Geological Prospecting State Institute, Kyiv • Subbotin Institute of Geophysics NAS Ukraine, Kyiv

  2. MAIN SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL AIMS: • compilation of magnetic maps • construction of global and regional models of a magnetic field and secular variations • investigations of lithosphere influence on secular variations – anomalies of secular variations • investigations of dynamics and kinematics secular variations focuses

  3. Secular variation of geomagnetic field δF in Europe(magnetic observatories data) 1995 - 2000 1990 - 1995

  4. Ukraine has four magnetic observatories: • “Argentina Islands” (Ukrainian Antarctic Station “Academic Vernadsky”) • “KYIV” (Dymer) • “Lviv” (Ivano-Frankove) • “ODESA” (Stepanivka)

  5. MAGNETIC OBSERVATORY “ARGENTINA ISLANDS”

  6. Magnetic observatory “Argentina Islands” on the UA Antarctic station “Academic Vernadsky”

  7. Geomagnetic observations in the magnetic observatory “Argentina Islands”

  8. Field trials of a magnetic-variational station in Antarctic

  9. REPET STATION OF UKRAINE IN 1972 - 1974

  10. Modern state of Repeat Stations Network in Ukraine

  11. RS density: • For this 50 RS, equipped by pillars we are planning some 100 – 200 km density. • Epoch 2006: • Were founded 21RS in Carpathian region and Central Ukraine. On each of this stations were measured magnetic field components D, I, F. • Epoch 2007: - We are planning to found new 30 RS in the west, east and south of Ukraine. - But we have a financial problem. As yet, we have funds only for 15 RS.

  12. Instruments for RS survey: • F – proton magnetometer MV-01 (USSR) • D, I – LEMI-203, Fluxgate Declinometer-Inclinometer (ISR, Lviv, Ukraine) • Variations of X, Y, Z – LEMI-008, Digital magnetic-variation station (ISR, Lviv, Ukraine) • Geographic North – hour angle method of Sun, theodolite UT2M (USSR)

  13. Field works: LEMI-203 on RS

  14. Measurement praktice

  15. Field works TARGET RS PILLOW

  16. Measurements practice • measurements with a proton magnetometer are carried out a few meters around the site for determination of field’s local gradient and detection of metal peaces that may be recently occurred in site • Set up of the base station for continuous F-recording during the whole duration of measurements in a distance 30 – 200 m from the pillar • F-readings above the pillar before and after D I-measurements • 4 – 8 cycles of DI-measurements per day during 2 – 3 days, orientation controlled by 1 – 2 triangulation points before and after each cycle

  17. Astrogeodesic parameters of RS points

  18. Reduction of X-, Y-, Z-components of Repeat Stations to epoch 2006.5 due to Magnetic Observatory “Belsk” (PL)

  19. The main problems: • a modernization of magnetic observatories – replacement of old equipment by digital magnetic-variational stations and modern fluxgate magnetometers • improvement of reduction methods for considering of large distances between RS and magnetic observatories • improvement of geomagnetic and astronomic measurements methods to reduce errors • financial support of investigations • RS equipment upgrade
