  3. More About HIV • HIV-infected people don’t develop AIDS symptoms until years after infection • HIV-infected individuals can feel healthy yet still spread virus to others

  4. How is HIV Spread? • Body fluids (semen, vaginal fluid) throughsexual contact • Blood (sharing of needles) • Transmitted to infants duringpregnancy or throughbreastmilk

  5. How HIV Defeats Immune System • In healthy people, immune system attacks & destroys invaders (bacteria, virus-infected cell, cancer) • In AIDS patients, immune system is infected & destroyed by HIV • Body is unable to defend itself • AIDS patients usually die of infections that a healthy person would normally resist

  6. Real Life Connection: • As of 2005, 1.2 million Americanswere HIV positive. • As of Dec 2008, 184,4209 Californiansreportedcontracting HIV. Of those, 85,958 have diedfrom AIDS.
